What's bros,

I'll be in Bangkok in August for some biz and other recreative purposes. Any of you have a recommendation for a hotel? I'm not balling enough to check into Oriental Hotel so a price around 3000 baht pr. night would be good.

I've been looking at two of the Starwood hotels:

Aloft Hotel - Suk 11
, Looks cool and new in a great location and also Fourpoints - Suk 15, which also seems nice and in good local, but a bit bland and business like. Last time, I stayed in Dream Hotel also Suk 15, which was very nice as well.

Prefer staying around Sukhumvit or Siam Square.

Lulz @ Aloft: We have one of those about 2 miles away from me in Leawood, Kansas... Hip place though, good vibes there.

Your location to stay in is excellent, but honestly I've never tried to stay in a hotel there having family in town. -So just hit up expedia/hotels.com/priceline/etc. or whatever you like to use for finding good hotel rates and don't settle for less than 3 stars.

I stayed in Asia Hotel Bangkok for many times. I didn't know that it is haunted till someone told me. I think ghosts are afraid of me, I am ghost-repellent certified. It's cheap and five minutes away from city's shopping malls (walking distance).

Yes Lukep is 100% correct, it can rain a lot, and some sois (lanes) off Sukumvit Rd routinely get flooded in the wet season, also some hotels can be a long way down the soi from Sukumvit.!! Something to check out before booking ...... !! The 'skytrain' as named is a long way above the water, and some hotels are close to it or the stations.

Take a look for the Oriental Hotel Bangkok was there a couple of years ago and was one of the nicest hotels I've been so far!
Read you Nein???

OP said he couldn't afford the Oriental right up front... Sheesh.

But yeah, I keep finding myself there for lots of different functions like Brunch & weddings... The Oriental is clearly the #1 hotel in BKK.

Did you have that Foie Gras on the buffet at Lord Jim's? Oh man that was some good stuff...

Shame on me, haven't read his full post :(

Don't remember exactly what I had there, just that it was way superior to other 5 star places 2 of my friends have been. Anytime in BK (and if you can afford it) the Oriental is the place to be ;)

My personal favorite is the President Solitaire on Soi 11 (past Bed SupperClub). The place is really well done and a good value for the money (about $70 - $100 per night). Plus Soi 11 is pretty convenient these days with so many new bars and restaurants opening up on the Soi.

Isn't it a bit old though?

Just booked tickets with Singapore Airlines, looking forward to seeing if they're all that they're made out to be. Only monkey class unfortunately.

President Solitaire blows for the money. For the same price you can stay at Park Plaza right down the street from Asok which is a pretty sick hotel. You also don't have to deal with walking all the way down shitty ass soi 11 every time you want to go out.

Depends on where you're going. I love Soi 11. Charlie Brown's for Mexican, Australian Bar, German Beer House, sushi, Zanzibar, Korean BBQ (though I think they tore down that place), tons of outside bars in the hotel lobbies, etc. Plus you have nightclubs: Le Fenix, QBar, Bed, and Climaxx. And how can I not mention, Cheap Charlie's :-)

And PS has a transport service (free) that will take you to the BTS or most anyplace up and down Sukhumvit.

Personally, I dig the PS because of the staff. Many of them have been there for nearly 10 years now and they've always taken care of me.

Once when I was trying to save a few bucks I booked a little boutique joint on Soi 10 on a friend's recommendation. When I arrived I was told that there was no hot water in the room. I asked how long it would be out for and they said my entire stay (which was nearly a month). I tried working with them on moving me to another room when one opened up but they insisted that I had to keep that room because they were booked solid the entire month.

I told them to hold my bags and took a taxi up to PS. Unfortunately all of their standard rooms were booked and I didn't feel like paying 4200 baht a night for one of their better suites. One of the staff recognized me from my previous stays and asked what the deal was. I explained and he took me to another hotel (not owned by the President Group), negotiated the room rate down for me, drove me back to the hotel on Soi 10, and carried my bags up to my room at the new hotel.

I haven't stayed at the Park Plaza but I've been by it a gazillion times. It looks nice. But the folks at PS have taken care of me pretty well when I've stayed there so I always give them my business.
