I'm trying to copy and paste content from word into wordpress and it keeps fucking up all the formatting. A couple of weeks ago this worked fine and now it's busted.
Anybody have any ideas as to why and what I can do to fix it? I've tried regular copying and pasting and I've also tried using the 'paste from word' button, the 'paste from plain text' and a whole host of other shit. To give you some idea of what I am loosing: Bolded text, hyperlinks and general formatting such as bullet points. |

I've had the same problem myself in the past. Normally this is due to the theme you're using not having a full and proper CSS definition set. Lots of premium themes are going to have tons of great shortcodes, yet their standard Ul/LI, H1-5 etc. aren't properly defined.
One thing worth trying out: Paste from Word to Dreamweaver, then copying the source code and pasting into Wordpress from there. Seems like there is a bit less 'lost in translation' that way |

It's something relatively new so I am guessing it's a wordpress update but not entirely sure. Glad to know it's not just me, hopefully somebody has a solution as it's annoying as fuck. I don't have dreamweaver unfortunately. |

Can you save your Word docs as .htm and then open them in a text editor from which you there paste into Wordpress's HTML input after the removing all the header garbage with Word produces? Worth a shot anyways |

Try using Windows Live Writer as an offline editor, and posting directly to WP from that (you need to enable xml-rpc)

That's why I create author accounts on all my sites and ask my writers to write the articles directly within WordPress.
It saves so much time, stress and hassle it's not even funny. Can't believe I've been doing the Word copy-pasting for so long...

That still strips all the formatting like bold and hyperlinks. Thanks for all the ideas so far. |

In fact when I just copy and paste into another word document it's also stripping bold and hyperlinks - could this be a weird setting I've got ticked in word with copy and pasting? |

OK, give this a shot. I'm not sure if it will work for you or not.
I use Office 2007 still. Try creating a new document using "New Blog Post" instead of "New Document". Then paste it into Wordpress and see if this will transfer the formatting for you. I'm not sure if it'll work for you or not. Just a thought for you to try. DISCLAIMER: I'm an Old Fart and have no real programming skillz. Lulz

Here is the trick I use to create html ready copy for word press or other web page creation.
1. cut/paste the document into notepad or other plain text editor (this strips out the word formatted code you can't see most of the time) 2. copy/paste the plain text into an html editor. Preferably a standard WYSIWYG editor. 3. Format the document using the html editor 4. while in html view cut/paste the code into WordPress or other web page creator. Is this a PIA? Yes. Is there any way other way to ensure that you don't get the weird MS formatting shit that Word puts in? Not that I know of other than what a couple of the other folks do as a work around. 1. set up a user account for your writers and have them format and edit the web page directly. 2. Have your writers write strictly in html format. i.e. have them do 1-3 for you. |

I made a thread this month about this problem, only not in WordPress, but my custom CMS. I finally found convertwordtohtml.com "Word Cleaner" and it has been a God send. It literally takes me 5 seconds to convert 50 .docx files into .html files that I then open in notepad and copy/paste to my editor's html view.
What I love about it is it has a template system that allows you to specify find/replace variables like “ to " to automatically convert magic quotes and other Wordcrap into html code. It's fucking expensive but the time it has already saved me has paid for itself. |

Got it fixed, wasn't wordpress at all - was just word. Apparently when you use a registry cleaner on win7 it can cause copy+paste to not take formating. I just had to open word in safe mode and then copy and paste something, then reboot and now it works fine.
