I break my back for one of the larger piece of shit banks in the US for nearly 5 years now and how do they repay me? With my last fucking paycheck after coming back from emergency dental surgery. I was out for 4 days, I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, and one bad molar. Never felt pain quite like 4 impacted wisdom teeth... fawwwwk. So they are letting me go due to excessive absenses. Excessive being that I had to take off a couple days earlier in the year due to the birth of my son, and some complications that followed. (baby mama psych issues... post pardom, etc) -So I've missed a few days, but I'm certainly not the type to be a blow off work for play.
I was getting close to what I would consider "ready" for self employment... diversified a few niches wide and a couple diff income streams, but I still wasn't ready to pry my lips from the corporate teet yet... house payment, newborn, etc, etc. Hopefully this will be a blessing in disguise... I was working 8-5 at the normal job, and then watching the baby till his mom gets off work at 9PM - then working from 9 to 1 on the online shit. I was fucking ragged after a few months of that. This isn't the first forum one would think of to go to for encouragement, but I chose to post this rant here, because the people on this forum are realistic, and not a bunch of perfect world, perfect day, rainbows and sunshine type fakies. If you've been there, and done that - and it turned out okay for you when you went solo, hit me back w/ some inspiration. I'm a little bit nervous about it, as my online income is only 2x that of work income currently, and losing insurance, etc could sting a bit. |

I lost my job at a top50 internet company back in 2003. A little after the crash. I was forced to make ends meet so I started some sites from scratch and made my payments. 4 years later I am going strong.
You've got some headway on what I had, you have niches and some money coming in. You'll be fine. However rest assured you're going to need to: 1) Continue those hours. 8-5, then 9-1. 2) Separate work from play. You're working for yourself now, wife needs to understand unless you're on that machine working, she doesn't eat. 3) Have fun. While the stress of supporting yourself can be overwhelming at times, you're now FREE! Best of luck. Post on WF more. |

If you're so upset about losing your job, spend all your time trying to find another one. Seriously, isn't that the obvious solution? Losing a job is not the end of the world. There's plenty of jobs out there. They might not be what you WANT to do, but sometimes you need to do whatever you can to get by, especially since you have a family to support. Work on your online empire in your free time until it's stable enough to make it a full time income.
Simple advice.

If you can support your family being self-employed. DO IT.
No one will thank you EVER for breaking your back or anything for a company. They are going to let you go with a smile at the first opportunity. Been there, done that. ::emp:: PS: Yep, still employed. But I am not breaking a sweat anymore.

great. now i think i feel my wisdom teeth coming too. this sucks.
also, good luck with your new plan. i have a feeling that your general disgust with your former employers and their tactics will easily be spun into long-term success in the affiliate marketing game.

Anger is a great motivating factor. There's nothing better for a type-A stubborn perfectionist than to have someone kick you when you're down and try to condemn you to failure.
Go kick some and make Teh Monies. Last edited by SleepyStarling; 08-30-2007 at 08:50 PM.. Reason: typo |

My son was about 3 months old when I said "screw it" and just gave my 2 weeks notice (lasted all of 20 minutes before I walked out totally).
Like you I had a framework to go off of, but it was still a hard month or two. Once that was over it's been smooth sailing since. Bumps here and there - but no different than working for another company. Insurance will be the hardest part for you - if that's something you can't deal with you need to find and keep a job till you can afford to pay for private coverage. |

Assuming you can get insurance, it's just another cost. People get all work up about not having "benefits" which to them means medical insurance. GEt a decent policy with the highest deductible possible and set aside an amount for that deductible. You will save money and may or may not have to use that deductible. Good luck.
