I didn't see this posted, and sorry if it is old news:
Shoemoney posted that he was extorted for $5k, or else his link would be pulled from DMOZ. I'm not sure if this is linkbait or not, because elsewhere it seems like people indicate they do pay to have sites listed. I am shocked. OK not shocked. But surprised.

Maybe so but I think DMOZ is terrible. Most of their editors just do whatever the fuck they want, so when Shoe wrote that post I was not surprised in the least.
Google needs to either buy them out or stop sucking them off because they are just wretched. |

Nah, actually if it is true that he had paid for DMOZ links previously, I wasn't sure if I should feel bad because I never thought of that or good that I hadn't had to stoop so low.

It looks like Shoemoney may have asked for it. Oh well, who knows? Enough drama.

wtf?
I do not see why people wanna get in DMOZ these days. Heck, case in point, I have two sites. #1: PR4, listed in DMOZ, tons of quality contents, generate less than 100 visitors/day #2: PR2, not listed in DMOZ, 500/ day and is growing. Grow up and do some link bait. |

Ole' Shoe is something else. He even closed comments on that post. Fuckin' pussy. If you can't take the heat, don't fucking post! I used to have a modicum of respect for the guy, but every time his name comes up, the respect level drops. What a douche.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: FUCK DMOZ. There's tons of other decent directories out there.

I wouldn't say he's a liar. He just happens to sometimes present only half the truth. That can tend to completely skew the story, though. :-P

From the link Arz provided, here is the entire thread where Shoemonkey allegedly offers a bribe:

shoemoney offered a bribe on digitalpoint way back in 2005. Word for word it was -- “if anyone seriously does know a dmoz editor pm me ill pay there lame corruption fee to get in the dmoz… I dont like it but I want to be listed.”
$5 Submissions is dead right, a third world bureaucrat will happily take boatloads of cash, but as soon as you say something in public, your the bad guy. Jeremy has to be banned from Dmoz but none of the editors being so vocal all of the sudden seem to give a flying fuck about cracking down on their own internal corruption. Its no secret that Dmoz is a shit farm and has been for a very long time. I don't care what editors do and get away with, but perhaps Dmoz's owners should. As for linkbait, of course, thats why shoemoney's blog is so popular. |

Either way, it's not extortion. He has paid for his other sites and it doesn't matter which sites they are because he pays. Now he is pissed because they demanded money for a site he didn't pay for that was listed.
Sorry shoe but you are no better than the mods that take bribes. What did you expect?

Yah, some DMOZ editors are corrupt... It was reported on other forums where the owner of shoemoney was being emailed that if he will not pay for the inclusion (which DMOZ is a free directory as everyone knows....) they will delete his site... And it was deleted.

Shoe mentioned that if he had a controversial topic to post he'd turn off comments to enhance the link value. He knows how to get attention and in this case I've been able to confirm a number of things (Shawn Collins who is participating in this thread confirmed that shoemoney.com was listed when I could recall seeing it listed) and think there is a lot of truth and some link bait to this story. One editor who added shoemoney.com to his DMOZ bookmarks and made some internal comments got the boot as an editor.

I have been following this and it seems like the verifiable things are true. Shawn Collins posted in this thread and has first hand knowledge of the original listing.
It's also interesting to see it say "please don't list", it doesn't say "don't list" so any editor can add it at his own risk. |

You can say that again. The last time any of my sites got listed there was in 1999 (before I became a fulltime webmaster). Good luck getting listed. Need even better luck to become an editor. It seems many "editors" locked down several (if not most) categories to keep competitors out.

I'll admit it. I'm a 100% corrupt dmoz editor and have been for the last 5 years. Fuck half are. I have three editor positions (its easier than trying to move up to catmod by doing a good job) I don't take money for listings just because dmoz listings are pretty much worthless and it'd be a waste of money, but i still list all my sites is deep bogus cats that never get any attention. Viva la viagra!
dmoz has been dead for a long time.
