Question What software do you use to backup your computer?

I want to backup my laptop and looking for free software. I need something simple, I don't want to end up having problems recovering if I have any problems.

I tried the free trial for this software called, "Autobackup-Pro" and you choose which folders you want to backup, and you can set it so every time you start your computer it backs up your computer with those specific folders. The part that I like is that, instead of making a new backup everytime it only updates the folders that have changed.

Well the trial expired and I can't find a crack, so trying to find something else that's simple and free.

I'd really like an image/mirror type software (even though, I know nothing about this stuff, or how complicated it could be to set this up). So, if I got a new computer I wouldn't have to do anything, install windows, software, nothing. Just install the image of my old laptop, onto the new computer, and the computer is ready to go instantly. Is something like this possible? Anything free like this available?

Thanks

Thanks

Ferbent has a spectacular aura about
Mozy online backup has a free version where you can backup up to 2GB. I use the paid version for $5.95 per month with unlimited backups.

It works in the background and it's easy to restore if you have to. It works well for me.

I already have a external hard drive, but that sounds like a good idea, especially if it works in the background and I don't have to go out of my way to connect external drive, etc..

Also are those services reputable? I don't have to worry about their servers shutting down or something like that? Going out of business? Everything is secure? Something about this type of service online makes me feel kind of uneasy. I'll give it a try if I don't have any other options.

They are definitely reputable but that doesn't mean to say they couldn't go out of business in the future. I do the occaisional back to a dvd just in case. TechCrunch has lots of reviews on these kinds of online backup services if you need more info.

If you're on Windows, you've got a backup utility already installed.

Just search backup in Help & Support.

I'll go with this, it even creates a restore cd so I can restore the entire computer if anything happens.

im a firm believer that everyone should own a ubuntu closet server. heres a few things mine do (and i got this for $200):

-store my files as a network attached storage device with a 250gb hard drive
-acts a router/server of any kind (internet, print, file, anything)
-streams my music to me via a browser when im away from home (Gnump3d)
-allows me to remote desktop into it and fuck with unix/shell commands when im in class. great for learning unix, too
-acts as web server, mysql server, php server. both locally (good for sandboxing) and via the internet (good for serving temporary files)
-rips DVDs and CDs for me at one click (automatically adding them to the appropriate folders in my file library)
-burns DVDs and CDs for me at one click

the best part is: it does all of this shit without affecting your main computer at all.so you can 'outsource' all of your cpu intensive tasks to this thing in the closet that'll take care of it for you. that way, if you want to rip a CD or DVD, it wont bother your main computing on your main sys.

just a few things that $200 gets ya. its 1ghz and 512mb ram. pick one up, seriously!

I just backup all of my important folders on my removable HD once every month or two. Works for me.
