I've been doing affiliate stuff pretty hardcore since may and now that school is back in full swing I'm finding it hard to concentrate on my school work. It seems that with increasing sales online I focus more and more time on expanding and growing my sales. As a result my grades are slipping and I really don't care that much about my school work. Anyone else going through a similar scenario? How do you split up your focus and have you found any good techniques for getting 2 totally different goals accomplished at the same time without letting one of them fall behind?

It was easy, I got expelled from high school, then during college decided that was also a waste of my time. Not going to school IS an option, but it takes some guts and/or brains to realize that your teachers have an IQ which approaches that of a rock.

Everyone here is saying school, but I'm going to be different. Don't get me wrong - school IS important- it's just that you should do whatever you are passionate about, and what makes you money. There are no guarantees in life, and even with a college degree, you are not guaranteed a sweet spot in life. Most of my friends with college degrees are unemployed, or broke, or miserable in their jobs. If you are one of the lucky ones making the online thing work, milk it for what's it worth. School will always be there.

School comes first, but luckily my income has been pretty stable and is passive. So I don't need to spend more than a couple hours a month.

I actually got into AM because normal jobs were so lame while you are going to college. You need to realize that first. Wait tables? Pour drinks? Retail? Fucking lame. I loved AM during college and did school during daytime and did Internet Marketing at night or on Fridays or Sundays.

You should try prioritizing heavily. Get things done when you should and only do things when you should. If it is an AM time sit at the AM desk and do that only.

Have another desk in another area with school books and stuff. Or go to the library. Possibly outsource to another student for stuff they do better or to someone else so you feel like you can hand things off.

Yah I got in to AM for the same reasons, and now that its taking off I want to spend all of my time making it grow. I guess I just have to set time limits to how long I spend working on AM and make sure I have enough time to do my school work.

I wish mine was that stable, but its not so I find myself always checking, tweaking and waiting for results.

It's definitely hard to sit there and do these projects that your supposed to "care" about when your doing it in the real world and showing a profit. I am 1 semester away from deciding on my masters.. I agree with the rest that school will always be around.. The lower barriers to entry for money on the internet, possibly not.

That being said, I feel 80-90% of the people I am in class with don't have the drive to actually go beyond the 9-5.

These are the exact same reasons it's hard for me to care about my projects. I am in commerce, so there is some overlap between what I do online and the course material. These classes, marketing and accounting, I am doing wicked because I can see an actual application of the material and I try to incorporate it into my business.

Yah I have talked to a others in my class, and maybe one or two seem to be able to even envision a career outside of an accounting firm.

I am having the same problem right now also as I am in college but care more about getting my work done on my sites then my next six page English paper. Like others have said I also know people who can or do not have jobs but have their master degrees. One of my buddies has his masters from Cornell and does not even have a job now.
I know in my head school should be first but right now online is more important to me.

I am in 10th grade, and the work is really not that hard.

.. but it seems I just sleep, and work on the internet, totally forgetting any homework.

For whatever it's worth... A college degree is good for your entire life. It'll open doors. It'll provide you a good social opportunity.

Affiliate Marketing, internet marketing, etc might not be around forever. Who knows. Look at a company like Demand Media - once they get going full speed a LOT of affiliates are going to lose their income.

Don't forget: C's GET DEGREES!

I was in college in the 90's and I was invested in the tech bubble at the time. Saw a stock go from fifty cents (where I got in) to $80. Was feeling large and in charge but put focus on school instead for a three month period. I got an 'A' in one of the most difficult CSci courses while my single stock dropped to $5 before I pulled my head out of the books long enough to pay attention. Yeah, that sucked. Sold at a profit, but at what cost. That 'A' doesn't mean a thing today - the degree, sure, but it's about prioritizing. In my case, I should have settled for a 'B' and $40K.

You're in school, you've made an investment for this semester - look at the opportunity costs of putting IM/AM on the backburner. Look at the opportunity costs of not having a degree. Either way you need to be looking a little bit more long term than just the immediate. Good luck.

I am doing part time right now. Instead of taking 4 courses, I am taking 2. I do not want to give up 5 figures/month income for school and not to mention the experience I am getting. Work experience is more important than school. I'll get my degree, some day. All those suckers coming out of school are thinking they can get a decent job at managing people without experience.
