I'm going to go see a doctor about this but I was curious to see if anyone here has experienced sleep apneia before? I've had it for the last couple months but i didn't know what it was until recently.
I've had really bad insomnia lately, and for some reason I can only sleep in short naps during the day, I'm just exhausted all the time. No pills or anything can get me to bed. Then in the short time when i do sleep at night i'll wake up and realize that i'm not breathing. It hurts like a mother fucker and it feels like I'm drowning. Even though I'm awake at that point its not until i get into a complete panic state that i can start breathing again, and i get this huge all over my head brain freeze. I'm going to go to a doctor soon (hopefully this week) but at this point i'm confident I'm going to die in my sleep. Anyone ever have this? How'd you get over it? I found this article about it which makes me feel a bit better knowing more. Sleep Apneia But I don't snore and I'm not over weight or have breathing problems which kind of eliminates a lot of the possibilities that the article says causes it. weird

The machine sounds terrible but you get used to it. I have being using a CPAP machine for almost seven years now and it has sure helped my apnea. It sounds from the way you described it that yours may be a different problem from most as it is normally from the soft tissue "collapsing" in your throat and blocking the airway partially. Before the machine I would wake up 7 -10 times a night not breathing or having my wife jab me in the ribs because it would scare her and she wouldn't sleep well waiting for me to not breath. I did snore and am overweight but the symptoms were around even before I gained weight.
Go to the doctor and get checked out. They have a lot of ways to help with the problem now than they did even a few years ago when I was checked. Good luck. |

My grandfather had it and he had to sleep with a big old loud ass breathing machine.
I didn't read your article (really fuckin busy today) but they have good outpatient surgery procedures that are like offer something like a 70-90%reduction in the snoring. (Or from what I read about it afew years back) Supposedly it doesn't really effect your quality of sleep all that much (although I find it hard to believe with the loud choking ) However it does severely affect the sleep of those around you so you might die in your sleep from a fatal knife wound.

I found out I suffer from sleep apnea three years ago. I went to a sleep clinic where they monitored my sleeping overnight. Turns out I stop breathing on average 72 times an hour! So I stop breathing, gasp for breath, stop breathing, gasp for breath.....
I'm only 39 and only marginally overweight. My doctor told me that the only way I could possibly recover is if I had the body of an olympic athlete - not gonna happen! As mentioned, I have to sleep with a mask over my nose, which forces air down my throat. It takes a while to get used to, but you do eventually. I was exactly like you, felt like shit all day, having short naps all the time. Since having the machine, I get a brilliant nights sleep. It's a real pain living with sleep apnea, but you do get used to it. |

I was really overweight, but started working out again and now my snoring and apnea are reduced far more then when I was big fat tub of lard. If you're not a fat ass, then it's something to do with your nose and I think you can have that operated on. (But I'm not doctor...

Its just really really weird. I'm not really that worried about it and I'm sure the doctor will figure out something, i'm just like in this wtf kinda mentality. But for those of you who this is happening to and you don't know what it is, or if you have any friends complaining about it. Hopefully this thread can help ya have an idea of whats going on. I was really confused for a long time. More Symptoms They Listed Loud Snoring. |

Ever since my early years I have had major sleep issues...insomnia, hardcore sleepwalking, sleep apnea...I run the whole gamut....I've even been known to get physical without waking up at all.....Kind of embarrassing to admit I guess, but I've attacked more then a people sleeping with me over the years (lol)
I rarely sleep for more then 5-6 hours at a time. I went to doctors and sleep specialists and tried tons of drugs that left me groggy and stupid in the morning. I even participated in a sleep study where I was asked to sleep over night in a clinic and be filmed the entire time.....after exhausting all the possibilities I eventually discovered that I was simply too tightly wound when I was trying to go to bed at night; I had too much on my mind. I've a very hyperactive mind and I was finding it near impossible to slow my brain down so I could get a decent nights rest. Here are some of the things I do now to help me get a good nights sleep: - work out at night instead of in the morning...I have a gym in my basement with a universal machine, stairmaster and full length punching bag....so this is easier for me then it is for others - dont eat anything at least 3 hours before sleeping - if I am unable to sleep, or wake up and unable to get back to sleep, I dont toss and turn in bed. I get up, make myself a cup of chamomile tea (great for sleep problems) and I go have a workout or just hit the bag for a while. - don't eat dairy products in the evening, and no bananas either (did you know that bannanas are a highly allergenic food?) but seriously, the best thing I have found to put me down for a solid nights rest? Marijuana. No joke! I've even discussed this with my doctor who acknowledges this works for many people in similar situations. Dont smoke directly before going to bed as it will leave you tired and groggy in the morning as well as it can cause a fitful sleep....smoke about 1.5 hrs before going to sleep and just relax over the course of those 1.5 hrs...read a book or something....you'll sleep like a log. good luck buddy. |

just quickly reading over your symptoms...i dont think you have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea happens when you asleep and in an unconscious state; Your soft pallate falls back and blocks your airway. Your brain signals you to cough or shift so that you can breathe. but all that happens unconsciously. you never realize that you had that sort of experience. A sleep study will definitely determine if you have sleep apnea. Other symptoms of sleep apnea is that you feel tired all day, you wake up and dont feel that you had fully rested night. If you have someone that shares a bed a with you...then they would probably able to tell as well.

i actually think i have it too. I wake up in the middle of the night gasping to breathe. Its pretty fucked up. I really feel like im dying until i fully wake up and start breathing again
I think its because i have bad insomnia and have to take sleeping pills to go to sleep. I never had it before i took sleeping pills. |

My son has it. Unlike you, he snores very loudly. During Christmas break he's going to get operated on to have his tonsils removed. He's been to two specialists and a sleep center, and for his issues the tonsillectomy will help.
FWIW....he works out seven days a week, is headed to the police academy this spring, and is in perfect physical shape. However....the apnea will kill him if he ignores it. Yes, you can die in your sleep. Eli, I don't mean to scare you...but in a way I do. This isn't something to mess with by googling it. Go to a specialist, get a second opinion. If the machine is what you need, use it. The machine may not be sexy in the world of young guys, but neither is a cold dead corpse. Be well, and don't ignore this. It is serious. |

Internet marketing does give you insomnia. Before this I would rarely sleep for more than 6 hours straight...at this point that would be a good nights rest. It's not uncommon for me to have nights where I sleep 1-3 hours. I'll go like this for a couple of days then I'll crash and burn for a day. Not necessarily sleeping , but just feeling like shit.
Xanax and alcohol ain't working anymore (only half joking), I try not to mix them. Tuesday at about 2 am I finally took a pill because I was desperate to go to sleep, I finally fell asleep at 3 am and woke up at 6 am. What has helped me is running and planning stuff out. I usually won't go to bed if I feel I haven't done enough for that day or finished something I was working on. As for sleep apnea, I was once told by a nurse I had it, but I have never really woken up choking. I do snore like a mofo though. |

Even if you need surgery the new procedures rock. They might want to use lasers on your tonsils or something. That is safer than cutting them out when you are an adult.
But go to the firs doc at least to get an opinion. Maybe check around or google what he says and look for a specialist. Or he might refer you to one. |

I've got sleep apnea. When I went to the sleep clinic, they told me that I stopped breathing about 163 time per minute! Seriously. My blood oxygen levels ran around the mid 60% range without a CPAP. Halfway through the night, the decided to try a CPAP out on me, and even though it was a completely alien sensation to have air blowing in my nose (not to mention the wires all over my body for the test) I got the best 4 hours of sleep of my life. I could actually feel a difference in the morning.
Now, I've been sleeping with a CPAP for about 4 years (same one in fact) and can't sleep without it. I don't even snore when I'm wearing it, but if I forget and fall asleep on the couch, I snore so loud that my wife can hear me outside. If you have to get a CPAP, it's not the end of the world, and you'll be glad you did. You won't believe how great you feel once you start getting quality sleep. This is the best CPAP on the market (IMHO): Sleep Apnea | REMstar® Pro M Series with C-Flex™ It's especially nice for people that are new to CPAP's because it has "C-Flex" which will lower the pressure when you exhale. That's the toughest thing to get used to in the beginning: pushing against the incoming air when exhaling. So, the C-Flex really helps. Here is the best mask: ResMed - Mirage Swiftâ„¢ II Nasal Pillows System It's the least obstructive, and most comfortable. Okay, it's comfortable after you get used to it. I remember the first week my nose was really sore, because I wasn't used to the pressure that it put on the cartilage. Now that I'm used to it, I wouldn't trade that mask for any other out there. BTW, being in shape doesn't mean you don't have sleep apnea. My grandmother is 4 foot 8 inches, weighs a whopping 80 - 90 pounds and she has sleep apnea and has to sleep with a CPAP also. On the other hand, my sleep apnea is mostly due to my weight according to the doctor. ![]() /edit/ oh yeah, and I can attest to smoking weed before bed. Rarely do I have a problem going to sleep, but in that rare case, weed (or Benedryl) knocks me the fuck out. |

I've had obstructive apnea for years and can't sleep with that fucking mask. My doc came up with a brilliant solution... get a pocket tee shirt, take off the pocket, sew it to the middle of the back and put a tennis ball in the pocket. When I roll onto my back, the ball wakes me enough to make me roll back onto my side.
Probably not a viable solution for central apnea because that doesn't have anything to do with lying on your back but, for all youse who have to use the machine, my docs tee shirt - ball idea might be worth a try.

Springer: that's a great idea for people that have positional sleep apnea. My boss had that and he just slept in a Lazy Boy chair and was fine, but prone he said he couldn't sleep.
Deliguy: I forgot another thing, if you do have to get a CPAP, get a humidifier with it. The humidifier will make a world of difference in comfort. |

Yeah, whenever I'm on my back, even in a chair or recliner, I snore like a mofo and eventually snort and choke and wake up gasping for air. If I'm on my side, I'm fine. I guess I have a lazy tongue or something.

A friend of ours is a doctor and worked in a sleep clinic.
She LOVED cases like yours, cause that was real medicine. She HATED most of the patients who were just - to use the medical term - disgustingly fat. "You snore? Now, WHY MIGHT THAT BE?" ::emp::

I don't have sleep apnea.
But I do have SEVERE insomnia. Right now, Im tired as all hell. The night before last I got 4.5 hours of sleep. Then I went to bed last night at 9pm. I woke up for no reason at 12:55 am Now its 3 on the dot, I am EXHAUSTED, my eyes are watering, and I've tried going back to bed 3 times now. It doesn't work. Lucky me, I get to leave in 30 minutes to go do a 12 hour job 150 miles away. My day is going to suck. Sometimes I can sleep alright, like 2 weeks ago I was in bed by 9:30 and up before the sun, but then I can't maintain it, and I just get tossed back into the midnight schedule. I don't have snoring or breathing problems, but when I wake up I am usually mid-thought. Its really weird.

Fuck Insomia.
I have it and it gets on my nerves something fierce. Newest development: Waking up at 3am (after 3 hours of sleep) and not able to get back to sleep. 2 weeks now. For all those who are gonna chime in with "just work on AM then".. never had that. basically, I am tired as hell, and sitting in front of a computer will not mean I get ANYTHING done, as my brain is fried. Tired as hell, but unable to sleep. ::emp::

Try changing your diet, different nutrients in food may have an effect on you, for example coffee and high caffeine products may have a bigger effect on your body causing you to stay awake, go to bed earlier the more hours sleep you have before 12 are better then after, try and get your body clock into a routine.

You are moving into hypochondria.
That "shock" or "falling and hitting", "like stepping off a curb" feeling sometimes companied by a dream fragment is normal. A lot of the times, musles twitch when people fall asleep rapidly. (This also happens when people enter anasthesia induced sleep on the operating table) It is normally considered to be muscle tension basically "discharging". ::emp::

holy shit you guys are gonna give the guy a heart attack....
My bet - He prolly dosent even have Apenia...it's prolly some deep down suppressed memory/issue that's poking it's head out... and anything can be cured with a positive state of mind and a healthy lifestyle. Which often conflicts with this line of work. It's all about balance. But ya, see a doc. All will be well.

My old man's got sleep apnea and the machine (just got a new one) isn't so bad. You need to go make an appointment with a doctor like yesterday though man. Who the fuck knows what it is with out some tests. Could be something serious or something minor. Could be stress, could be anything. Go take care of it.

LOL
Funny thing is, if there is time, my wife loves to do a similar thing. Say, on a weekend, she will wake up at 7 or 8 or something equally ungodly (annoying me, because IF i get to sleep, I love to sleep in). Then she proceeds to wake me and have breakfast. After breakfast, she goes back to sleep for an hour or two. She calls this her "taking a break from sleeping". Of course, I am left awake after the breakfast, as I can not go back to sleep. But yeah, if this form of insomnia persists, I will need to devise a strategy, and your mom's sounds like a good one. This is new territory for me, as normally, I could just not go to sleep at all. ::emp::

Actually, nope.
Regardless how much I like to smoke some weed, it is not a "proven" remedy... why? Simply, I can disprove that. Smoking weed makes me stay up all night, with a slight drifting away being the best I can manage. Try again. ::emp::
