Help Brainstorm....

Right, so my Dad wants a new website for his Computer repair company. But i have no idea where to start.
Anyone got any ideas?

His exact description of what he wants is "The whole sha-bang!"

If we could get some ideas rolling i'll be able to start designing. I've got a major creative block at the minute.

Exactly. Look at the competition.

Two ideas I came across that I liked:
1) Small computer shop selling parts on ebay as well, advertising this on flyers in their store and advertising their store on ebay auctions
2) A major computer retailer offering phone service (RESTRICTED hours) when you a)register and b)fill a form with your question, THEY call YOU and are actually very helpful.

Other than that, a decent design will already put you above a lot of the other small shops.

To avoid like the plague:
Flash

I HATE all those restaurants, small businesses, etc,... that have a full screen flash anim that will just crawl on my wifes small laptop.
If you want to reach the computer impaired crowd, go with clean, small, optimized HTML 1.0

Orly

Other points:
  • include offline marketing
print that URL everywhere, including, but not limited to:
- business cards
- flyers
- price lists
- invoices
- bumper sticker, etc..
(please leave the http://www off tho)
  • Provide a Corporate identity
Both site, business cards and everything should have a unified look.
Make a clean logo and include it everywhere. Decide on two colors (or even one) to represent your business.
If your dad's shop already has a color scheme/logo, use that for the site.
  • Provide clear, friendly and easy information
Chances are that you are either dealing with the computer impaired or the frustrated (after hours of self-repair failing).
Make the page easy to read, provide clear information including prices.
Also make the welcome page friendly and soothing. Research has shown that people experience great frustration, anger and even depression when faced with computer problems. You are here to help.

To include pricing is often not wanted or..Idontknow. however, I find it frustrating if I have to call first to get an idea of how much this is going to cost me.
------------------

After all, make your dad understand that the site is ONE PART of marketing and all parts should play well together. So, yes, he might have to shell out to get a few biz cards or new letterheads printed.

What is the main function of the website?

Most small company's site has 5 page. main page, Aim/Goal, product/service, about/company history and contact information.

as emp said, no flash, keep it simple and easy to navigate. Clean professional look is the best

and check this out before getting stock photo
