Will banks accept accidentally ripped cheque?

I got a cheque from a relative and I accidentally ripped the two sides about 1 cm off (it was in an envelope that I was throwing out)

Will banks accept it?

they will accept it as long as the check number , routing number, account number and signature are still visable and legible

They'll almost certainly take it - theoretically, you can write a check on any surface whatsoever (say, written in permanent marker on a rock) as long as it has the requred information. This article discusses a little of it:
