I'm getting a new line installed so that I can run another application strictly on that line with different IPs than my main line IPs. I made the mistake of telling him that this line was not for voice (It was being put in the middle of the livingroom behind the TV so he asked) and he was confused and was asking why I needed a new line. I told him it was for another modem. He was like but you have the fasted best <insert telephone guy speak here> top of the line blah blah, why would you need another completely different line, just for the internet? I just played dumb and acted like it was my husbands idea and those silly boys and their toys...blah blah.

For some reason I'm paranoid about outright telling the phone companies that I need to be able to rotate through their IPs for business purposes and I would like to have multiple lines enabling me to be running through multiple IPs at the same time. Am I right to be paranoid or do you think the guy that gets paid 13 bucks an hour is really going to care what I'm doing with my IPs?

Lie. He'll ask a bunch of questions if you tell the truth, not that it will get you in trouble but it'll just be annoying. Say it's for an xbox or something

Lie, or tell him to shut up and do his job. I know from personal experience that if your ISP thinks you are conducting business from home they'll try and stick you with a commercial plan. Other than that, can't think of anything - but a little paranoia is healthy.

Tell him to put you through to customer relations and complain that you were placing an order and he was asking too many questions and wasting your time. Now you want to cancel all your services with them and go to their competitor. By the end of the phone call you could have both services for the price of one. At worst, a decent discount.

Phone company won't care about what you're doing with the line. Just say it's for a fax machine. Done.

Secondly, the phone company has nothing to do with dial-up IP addresses. Your dial-in provider assigns those.

I think you played it fine. What does it matter what your doing with extra lines. They should be happy your ordering service. I love the hubby line

I love the hubby line too, and i think by the sounds of things, if you even tried to explain to him what you were doing, he probably wouldn't understand anyway.

If he asks more questions when he comes back to do the work you could always suggest to him that if he has a problem installing the extra line that you'll take ALL your business elsewhere a la m0rtal's post.

or you could say that it's fine if he doesn't understand how to put the second line in - the other company's workmen shouldn't have a problem.
