the site has been undergoing a huge ddos attack since about 11pm last night. So i forwarded it to whitehouse.gov. I figure if they want to attack anyone they might as well attack a government website. I may be no good at hunting them down but the NSA shouldn't have too much trouble

I don't know much about ddos attacks, but will that actually affect the whitehouse.gov site? I mean, they are attacking your site, so surely if you redirect your site to whitehouse.gov, the ddos attack wont also be redirected to that site?

Not unless the actual DNS server points back to the whitehouse.gov IP.

I didn't have to. I just did a domain forward. I first tested it by forwarding it to another site to see if the attack would follow. It did so now I have it forwarded to the whitehouse.gov.

If I do get in trouble I'm really not that worried about it. I don't know all the legalities behind but forwarding a legitimate domain even though its being attacked doesn't seem reasonable cause for allegations to an offense. Either way the choices seem all but fair. I can pay more money and upgrade the bluehat server which only hosts the one site and is all in all pretty worthless. I can move it to another more powerful server which would give the ddos attacker a run for his/her money. Or pay more money to make the site more ddos secure. Or i can just redirect the attack, relax a day or two and when their door gets busted in by the feds I can get my site back.

Well, I originally suggested to Eli to change the DNS to point to the IP address of the server where whitehouse.gov was hosted. That way, there's no referrer and it's pretty transparent.

Ddos attacks suck though. I've had it happen to an entire server once. A few hundred customers were not too happy, and of course most of them have no idea what a ddos attack is so they blamed my hosting company for having shitty uptime/service, lol...

Update:
The attack is still going full force but i got bored having fun with it so I put the site up on a real server. I'll get all the cisco protection moved over today to knock the attack down, but at the moment its not really making a difference. He's going to have to bring a hell of a lot more to the game to touch this server. Although i'll admit 1% cpu load is definitely the highest i've ever seen, so (s)he is pulling off a very good attack.

depending on the type of DDOS attack, your http redirect may not even pass the DDOS traffic to whitehouse.gov.

Most severe DDOS attacks are either UDP floods or TCP SYN floods to your IP. If you redirect your website with mod_rewrite or whatever, the traffic is still hitting your IP.

The only difference with those people and you're situation is that they are not aware of it, and you're knowingly with intend causing a situation that affects the Whitehouse in a negative way.

Essentially collaborating with the people behind it and willfully taking part in this illegal action.

Hopefully you're not putting yourself in a difficult situation here, because you really need to look for another lawyer.

1: If you've forwarded your domain before the attack and you didn't know about the attack when police is knocking on your door, then you're in the same situation as the people that you mention that are unknowingly part of a botnet.

2: If you forward your domain knowing (Your have admitted openly that you're aware of the attack and did the forward intentionally) that the domain is under an attack and it will deflect the attack to the Whitehouse website, then you're part of the group of the attackers and no longer an innocent party.

See the difference?

You're responsible for your own actions!

Example: You're actions could if directed to a regular small business website cause financial damage, let alone it's reputation as the site is constantly off-line, causing additional expenses as well.

You would be the one responsible for the downtime of the small business website, not the people behind the botnet attack, because you assisted and are solely responsible for the attack to be directed to the small business website.

Once again, you're responsible for your own actions.

Luckily the Whitehouse website is very well protected from these type of attacks, but they have you on their radar and you will probably have a lot of explaining to do.

i see that he has forwarded his domain to whitehouse.gov once again. the ddos that is currently running, does not go to the new IP(s) if he changes the dns. we've learned from our last mistake. no harm was intended for the whitehouse.gov website. now it has the ability to stay within one IP such as 66.66.66.66, or stay within a range of IPs such as 66.66.66.0/24. i am curious as to what happened with all the cisco protection that eli was talking about. the ddos can be stopped within minutes with a decent anti-ddos router/firewall. as for Unarmed Gunman's comment, the reason why robstool.com isn't being targeted is because that's not where he outed other people's methods. we do not care about hurting his business, we just want to make a point that outing other people's work/methods is not respectable. if somebody tells you some information that they want to be private, and you go and make it public... that kind of pisses those people off. anyway, we will stop the ddos in about a week or so (unless he gets some good anti-ddos protection before then). hopefully he has learned his lesson and will not out other people's work/methods in the future if they are meant to be private.

youkn0w Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Posts: 3 iTrader: 0 / 0%	i see that he has forwarded his domain to whitehouse.gov once again. the ddos that is currently running, does not go to the new IP(s) if he changes the dns. we've learned from our last mistake. no harm was intended for the whitehouse.gov website. now it has the ability to stay within one IP such as 66.66.66.66, or stay within a range of IPs such as 66.66.66.0/24. i am curious as to what happened with all the cisco protection that eli was talking about. the ddos can be stopped within minutes with a decent anti-ddos router/firewall. as for Unarmed Gunman's comment, the reason why robstool.com isn't being targeted is because that's not where he outed other people's methods. we do not care about hurting his business, we just want to make a point that outing other people's work/methods is not respectable. if somebody tells you some information that they want to be private, and you go and make it public... that kind of pisses those people off. anyway, we will stop the ddos in about a week or so (unless he gets some good anti-ddos protection before then). hopefully he has learned his lesson and will not out other people's work/methods in the future if they are meant to be private.
