This is one of my first posts in this forum, and I wanted to touch upon a topic that I find very frustrating. It is all the people who lurk around forums and never actually do anything. What I'm going to do in this post is summarize the Top 5 things that you need to do right now to start making money online.

1) Learn the basics of internet marketing

Yes, it is important to have knowledge about what you are trying to do. That is why forums are set up and informational products are out there. These can be good places to learn the basics. But, here is the key. There are many different types of internet marketing activities to become involved with. PPC, email marketing, becoming a publisher, making your own products, social media marketing, viral video marketing...the list goes on and on. Pick ONE of these fields and become an expert in it. It is incredibly easy to bounce around the forums randomly looking at everyones posts and trying to pick up bits and pieces. Only read the posts that are relevant to your chosen field. Don't waste your time.

2) Get your notepad out and write down some of your ideas

Take out a notepad, or start an word document and write down some of the ideas that you have for your chosen niche. Spend one day writing down every idea you can come up with. Then, cross out all of your ideas except for one. You are going to focus on this one project until you make it successful. When you are trying to make money online it is very easy to start a project, get it half-way finished, and then move onto your next great idea. Don't get trapped in this vicious cycle. Finish your ideas, get them to make at least some profit before moving on. If you have REALLY worked at your idea for one month and made absolutely no progress, then you can think about moving on. But that leads to my next point. Don't move on unless you have actually put in the work to make it successful.

3) Work harder than you ever thought possible

Working smarter is the way to get ahead in any business, not working harder. But, working harder is the way to successfully start any business. This relates to my last point, don't move on to the next project if the reason this project is failing is because you have been lazy. Your next project won't have any more success if you are still being lazy. Starting a new business is hard work. Don't buy into the hype of instant success. You will need to put in longer hours than at a normal job to become very successful online.

4) Make connections

Making connections is one of the most overlooked aspects of online business. Build friendships with the people you meet on forums, and they can turn into a windfall of profit in the future. This profit can be in the form of cutting edge ideas that they share with you, off the forum...or it can be through direct partnerships. I have become involved in areas that require very little of my time, and make be a lot of money because of partnerships.

5) Be creative, and be fair

The way to take a field and dominate it is to be creative. Offer something to your customers that is unique, or at least present it in unique gift wrapping. Also, be fair and honest. A lot of people online think they can get away with being dishonest because of the anonymity that the online world provides. These activities will come back to haunt you in the future. First of all, when it comes down to it, the online community is small, and your reputation will follow you. Be honest in your business dealings. And, create valuable products for you clients.
