I knew exactly what site you were talking about as soon as I saw the word "Arngren".
The guy (he's a dude named Fritjof Arngren) has been running a mail-order catalog here in Norway since the 80's and at one point even had his own store in Oslo. The store went under, but he continued his business online.

It's been years since I glanced at his site, but low and behold - it hasn't changed a bit since like 1997!

The site is an acid-trip of links, glary images, and a table nightmare. Looks like a 5th grade webdesign science-project.

Oh, and I like how they threw in a slutty looking girl at the bottom. Wtf does that have to do with his product catalog? lol...

Pretty cool. Keep in mind the price (400.000 NOK) is his price for importing it to Norway with added taxes, profit margins and such. I'm sure you can get those in the US for much less.

Here in Norway, you can't touch an American import car with decent horsepower for less than $100.000.

Interestingly enough, a layout like this DOES work in some cultures.
You guys seen how cluttered Korean and Japanese sites get? And yet they still do really well...

I think the clean minimalist styles that we're used to only really apply to anglo-based cultures as we're far too lazy to actually look at things for very long. If something we want isn't instantly apparent, we go somewhere else where it is.
It's like a car parking space. We'll happily drive around for half an hour trying to find one that's right next to the door, as opposed to parking at the edge of the parking lot and walking for 5 minutes.
