Tools Project management software?

Does anyone here use some type of project management software to track your progress? I usually have many projects that I'm working on all at the same time and have been looking into this a little bit but most of the software I've found is a lot more complex than what I need.

I don't need many special features or options. I'd like to be able track what has and hasnt been completed with each of my projects (like individual checklists for each project) and list the individual expenses/revenue for each project.

Anyone know of some software that would work well for this? I've been considering just using excel but I'd prefer something that's a little nicer to look at so that its easier to switch quickly between different sites (projects), quickly view which projects are making $, which ones havent broken even yet, etc etc.

MS PRoject works for me, but there is a steep learning curve involved to do it right.

Look at PMI Institute for some (hopefully) free templates.

Otherwise, go to sourceforge.org and search for some OSS solutions.

I just signed up at Project management, collaboration, and task software: Basecamp, so far so good. They have a free package you can try out, but I recommend going with the pay solution if only for the file sharing feature.

I use Redmine at work. It's pretty nice and customizable. It is a RoR app, so you'll need a suitable hosting environment for it.

TaskFreak - check out the online demo

it's quite awesome & great for just one person or multiple developers / management / client interaction.

It's really just a glorified ToDo list but you sound like you want something simple. This is it.

I have only looked at a couple of the suggestions so far, but from the demo, this looks like its exactly what I need. Drank a bunch of beers watching the game tonight so I want to look over everything again tomorrow, but this one looks perfect. Best GUI of the ones I've looked at so far...I've been considering hiring a couple employees lately so the easy to use interface is a huge plus for me. Thanks.

MS Project is a buggy piece of crap.
A badly programmed Interface to a DB backend.

Steep learning curve ahead?
Yes, it is quite complicated, but also just utter crap.

Avoid.

We've been using it for almost a year, has worked out great. It at least has a 30 day trial to see if it'll work for you. If you need any help with setup / implementation, please let me know.

Question for you...with that software, as an administrator, am I able to set specific instructions to be visible by only specific users? So for example when employee A signs in, it says complete task #1, and when employee B signs in, it says complete task #2?

Yes, or you can assign tasks to a group of users. It's all up to you.

I use BaseCamp for collaborating with clients and labor.

For resource management I use Outlook and Taskline. Taskline plugins into Outlook and adds some fields to the the Tasks to let you specify the length of time the task will take. It then automatically inserts those tasks as Calendar items, observing the work hours you follow. This allows me to give clients extremely accurate timelines and never overbook myself.

Download of the Day: GanttProject
That one's done wonders for me eing able to keep track f my productivity. I now know exactly how many hours of slippage I have on every project and that I'm collectively thousands of hours behind on where my life should be.

Have to disagree with you there. I have 5 PMP's on staff who delegate to 200+ developers and other IT personnel using Project/Project Server and it's pretty damn spiffy, especially when it comes to reporting.

If you take the time to learn it, it's pretty good for single folks too.

As far as bugs, what doesn't have them. I can say project has nothing in the way of bugs that keeps us from using and abusing it.
