I'm contemplating leaving a business partnership that I've been working my ass off on for the last 3 months and I need to vent.
I'm a guy, and I'm getting very tired with working for/with other men. I tend to have an entrepreneurial attitude of "Ok, this project doesn't do everything for everyone, and there are some glitches, but lets launch now and fix them when we have cash" - but usually the partner/employer/client will start focusing on little bullshit like the pixel alignment in an HTML page and will delay launch by months. They get the little insignificant details right, but at the cost of the big details. So far I've worked for men who were perfectionist little bitches, men who had to have their say (and couldn't just let the professional do his thing), who "always knew better than me", who would be afraid of change and who just have too many mental issues interfering with their business decisions. The result of all of this has been that every internet-related project I've worked on has suffered significant, unnecessary, delays. I used to work for a Yogi, and he was of the opinion that it was to have both genders in the workplace, because women planned well but executed slowly, and men executed projects quickly. I'm just not seeing that happening in real life. I'm considering seeking out female business partners from now on, to stop dealing with the bitchy princess shit I've been getting from guys. Now, this post isn't just a vent, I want to get your genuine opinion and experience with this: have you worked with businesswomen before? Am I right about the difference between working w/ women & men or am I just a pissy douche? In your experience, do women generally move faster on business decisions than men? I appreciate hearing your point of view on this |

Honestly, it sounds like you need to grow a set of balls and stop writing harlequin novels in forums bitching about the people you should be confronting.
Partner sucks? Fire him. Or you can keep looking for a mommy figure to work with....

it is my experience that men are too quick to jump the gun, they jump in head first without testing the waters, and some women are too slow....or too indecisive. you need to find a strong headed woman for your partner that isnt the money provider...that way you get both sides, sounds like you have picked some real winners so far. maybe next time discuss business goals before shaking hands...dont just pick em off the internet because he has a cool profile picture and thinks the white sox rock!!! finding somebody that compliments you often means somebody that excels in things you lack....man or woman

Thanks for all the feedback. I sat down and wrote out possible plans of action, and my balls grew just a teensy bit. I'm going to confront him tomorrow, give him an ultimatum from a stronger position (I happen to be the one that has nothing to lose, but lots of time invested), and blow him out of his comfort zone. I think that this thing will go my way - and I'll keep you updated.

Haha, agreed. But I still think it's a terrible idea. Girls tend to think with their hearts, and that doesn't translate well in business. And when I say hearts, that's a nice way of saying irrational and unpredictable emotions*.
*Does not apply to the exceptional women of WF.

Women tend to rule by committee. They want lots of input and thoughts and then make a group consensus decision. This is annoying to me.
My dad was not like this and I am not like this. I get some input, get some idea of the worst case scenario and do the best plan at the time. I have had two women bosses. One was the committee chair type and one was the more typical "A" type personality. I had no problems at all with the "A" type. But of course those types get the stereotype of being a little "bitchy". Not from me though. There are lots of different types of managers. The perfectionist planner types will not get far in the in internet field. You need to do things like yesterday. Then perfect them, or just keep apologizing. |

I've enjoyed working with most women. There are exceptions of course, especially the ones that feel like they have to constantly prove something because they're not a man and then they take that out on you. But for group projects and ventures, I would choose women. Lots of good ideas, lots of planning and usually lot more sociable which makes working together easier.

sorry to hear that. im currently working with different men and women in our office and i haven't encountered such problem. i usually hang-out mostly with men especially when we want to go to some places and have some beers. I think you should teach yourself to understand things or better talk to them and tell all your complains.

I personally like to work with people who are the complete opposite of me. It creates a good balance. Some people (generally females) tend to get heavily stuck in the planning stages preparing for everything that could go wrong or right or how things should get done and I'm always like Yeah yeah yeah whatever get the bitch done and move on. Well how should this get dealt with? I don't care, do whatever you want just get the bitch done.
I tend to rush into things and get myself in trouble or create more work for myself later so its nice to have someone to balance me out to a rational level. For that Rob is a perfect business partner for me, he has a nack for looking years into the future and being right every damn time.

I'm glad to hear everyone's feedback, its a lot more useful to hear your real life experiences than to be speculating about these things by myself. I was also told that a lot of it comes down to personality and has nothing to do with gender... and that marriage suggestion is quite sobering.
I went through with my plan yesterday and forced my partner to execute the project the way that makes sense to me. He's been working on it for 4 years and its about time someone pushed him to launch. So far it seems like everyone is happy and my financial goals look achievable again. |
