I need a really simple, easy to use remote desktop solution. I haven't looked into using the built in windows one, so that might work too.Time is limited so I'd like to be prepared and know what I'm doing (and installing) when I get there.
Requirements: Setup difficulty isn't an issue Once pc is vista, one is XP User experience needs to be extremely simple (otherwise I'll be entering them )I want to put a desktop icon on one pc, and basically that's all it'll take to connect to this other PC. Needs to be secure, probably rules out web apps that do this? What it's going to be used for: Entering deposit information for a business. The owner doesn't want to visit the business every night to enter the deposits into the software. PS: Normally I'd google but I'm looking for recommendations. I can only access the business for a few hours, and this needs to be setup ASAP. It's for a family member.. Looking at http://www.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=en , any advice? |

Which computer needs to be remoted into? The XP or Vista box? If you need to get into the XP box, and it's XP Pro... then I'd use Windows RDC for sure. I use it for everything, servers and desktops. It's more seamless than any other remote desktop client I've ever used. Not sure what editions of Vista it is built into, but if it an option... I'd definitely use it. Feel free to hit me up if you have any Q's about it.

Solid service, and the trial has tons of features too. You can use the trial as long as you like. Use this program for so much. You can access your computers from anywhere. |

I use RDP, VNC, LogMeIn and ShowMyPC and they all serve their purpose very well. Mainly I use RDP but Shady is right, unless you're on a Windows Server with multiple CALs you'll bounce the logged in account off (unless the account you are loggin into is yours). I use VNC and LogMeIn as my backups (in case of an IP change, ect) and ShowMyPC for remote help kind of stuff.

I wouldn't say 'worst case'. I find RDP to be very fluid. That's why it's my first choice.

are there any solutions that work through a secure proxy/firewall? at some offices i want to RDP (or something equivalent) to my home workstation, but in one case they literally block every external connection unless you go through the internal proxy server, which only allows outbound connections to port 80 and 443. any suggestions for circumventing this scenario?
i've read about tunneling VNC through SSH and setting up putty to be a local proxy, or something along those lines, but never got it to work quite right. there's got to be an easier way. |

xmcp: that would seem to be the easiest way, but is RDP configurable to tunnel through a web proxy? |

You can enable RDC to run multiple concurrent connections...
Enabling Concurrent Remote Desktop Sessions on Windows XP SP3 - Patched file included « The Boiling Mind - thoughts from a techie guy RDC seems to run a lot better for me than any of the VNC/UltraVNC programs, especially at residential upload speeds. Also the ability to disable some unnecessary features is nice to speed things up... ![]()

You need someone on the receiving end to initiate remote assistance - it's very slow and grainy - then again, I haven't even tried using it in years
