Need a social networking script/program recommendation

My wife has it in her mind that she wants to start a niche community site for local women.

I need your recommendation for a good social script. Should be under $1000 if possible. I've searched and searched and none really stand out. Any ideas?
 


Check out Buddypress - it's still in early beta days but looks pretty damn good (and free) - you can probably get a developer and designer on the case for just under $1k..

Opensource too..

I have used PHPFox for several sites. I'm experimenting with Buddypress, and found Ning to be crap back when I first tried it -- however I have heard good things about it since.

So -- use PHPFox if you're on an up to $1k budget. You can get it installed and have an expert whip you up a custom template for around half that.
