Mustread Thinking About Buying An HD TV For My Bedroom, Any Suggestions?

I don't mind if its a plasma or LCD, just something nice for watching tv and movies. Size would have to be 32" - 42".

Post some links of the tv's you've gotten and how their performance was.
I would like to spend around 800.

I just bought a 47" Toshiba Regza for about 2k, I'm guessing the 42's would be just over 1000, very high quality though just make sure you get the new model.

If your going to spend the money, go all out. Hubby had been wanting a flat screen for the last 3 years. I really hated spending money on something we already had (a tv) but it was his birthday and he deserved it, so I got him a 50 inch 1080p. It's an off brand (I'm not much of a brand name person) All I can say is WOW. Totally worth the money. So make sure whatever you get, you get the 1080p. and spend the extra 10 dollars amonth for HD channels...you'll never go back.

Keep in mind that a larger TV can cause you some trouble going to bed.

I have a huge master bedroom 22x16', and had a 50" plasma in the corner. After 2-3 days, found that after I turned South Park off at 11, it took me an hour to fall asleep. moved the TV downstairs to my office, and used my 22" LCD again, no more sleep problems. Just sayin

Yeah make sure its 1080p. 32-42-LCD anything bigger probably a Plasma would be better(but its preference)

I have a 37" Phillips LCD TV and I absolutely love it. The TVs in the showroom look oddly small, but enormous when you set it up at home. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Home movies on a quality big TV are fabulous. It's like being at the movies without the sticky floors.

My earlier model was a 32" Westinghouse refurb that has a bad mainboard and needs fixing. Learn from my mistake and avoid refurbs, because I got fleeced.

Yeah I was going to say something about a tv in the bedroom but then didn't cause It's just my opinion. But since we're sharing, I've always thought tvs in the bedroom were terrible ideas...when you're single for reasons like bb said (even though he's married) and for couples...it's just distracting. The bedroom is like a sanctuary to me and a loud bright tv can be very vexing to the soul. But that's just me. Other people seem to love tvs in the bedroom.

Mirrors on the other hand...

I mean, 50" is REALLY big for my bedroom and my bedroom is huge, I suppose a 32" in a 12x12 would be just as invasive. I just found it hard to go to sleep after looking at such a big screen, really sensory overload before bed!

The Samsung line is very nice; I've got a 32", and the clarity/contrast is much better than the competition in the same price-point.

I agree with the Samsung. I got one 2-3 years ago and it is awesome, still like brand new, never had a problem.

At 32-42" you will not be able to tell the difference between 720 and 1080, don't waste the money. At 32" it's actually impossible for the human eye to tell the difference.

I have a 27" Samsung LCD, a 32" Samsung LCD, a 42" Samsung DLP and a 50" Samsung plasma on the way. Both of my computer monitors are Samsung LCDs and the 2 before that were Samsung CRTs. Never had a problem with any of them.

Honestly, the Samsung DLPs are incredibly nice if you don't mind a TV about a foot thick. The base of the LCDs/plasmas is about half of that anyway. And you can generally get close to another 10" on the screen for the same price. You don't get the same viewing angle however, if that's important to you.

61" DLP for $1500: Amazon.com: Samsung HL61A750 61-Inch 1080p LED Powered DLP HDTV: Electronics

That being said, spend some time at Best Buy and see what TV looks best to you, you're going to be the one watching it.

Well it depends how far you sit. If you're also using it as a monitor, anything less than 1080 on a 24+ would look shitty.

Good grief! I watched Sesame Street on a 13" black and white TV when I was a kid and turned out just fine! Just get a TV that you like, has a good warranty, and is affordable to you! It's a TV for goodness sakes, not a house!

Our Best Buy had a 720 and a 1080 of the Samsung 32" TVs side by side, and I could see a clarity difference at most distances that you'd normally view it from in a den or a bedroom.

Gonna agree with Turbo. TV in the bedroom? Don't you already have one in the living room? And in the computer room? And in the fridge? and in the Spare room?
Then again, I'm the kinda guy that barely watches an hour of TV a day, so what do I know?

Sampunk: Those Gizmodo & Kotaku fuckers get the best stuff That said a chick that's a sales rep for "oversized" sets. Anything that's 80" plus.
Hilarious thing is that she's 5'1"... Psychological sales tactic to make the TVs seem even larger when she stands in front of them.

It depends on what is played on said TV. It helps if you have a dvd player or at least Cinemax..

i've been reading your responses, and i've come to realize that having a TV in the bedroom is a bad idea. Sleep is a very important to me. I'm pretty sure that i wont be sleeping much with my new TV..

Honestly speaking, i dont even watch TV, im too busy to spend time in the living room. with all the errands i have going on.

Are you sure they had the same feed? BB has a bad habit of running side by sides in an unrealistic manner. Such as one with hdmi and the other with rca.

You don't need 1080 at 42 and below.

No you couldn't. Any difference was either the feed/cabling or psychosomatic.

I have a huge master bedroom 22x16', and had a 50" plasma in the corner. After 2-3 days, found that after I turned South Park off at 11, it took me an hour to fall asleep. moved the TV downstairs to my office, and used my 22" LCD again, no more sleep problems. Just sayin
Interesting, i too was gonna move my 50" into my very large bedroom and buy a 65" for my livingroom. ANyone else have a problem sleeping once they get a big tv in their bedroom?

I agree Turbo. Televisions in any room of the house is fine with me, but the bedroom is television free. It interferes with sleep and other stuff, and it forces me to read things not on a screen, people call them books.

The OP lives in NYC and most likely doesn't have many rooms to begin with so I could see it.

I've been a Sony fan all my life and I'm running a Bravia KDL-40S3000. I know of at least two friends who've been here, seen it and when out and bought one. Try AVSforums.com for some anal reviews. Theres a sticky or a thread for just about every flat screen out there.

I also use Samsung, although I hear the Sony's are great as well. I am not one of those crazy people who know all the specs and who notice a difference between the 720 and 1080 ect so take it for what it is worth.

DLP aren't bad, I had a 42 inch samsung and most people thought it was a flat screen because they are still pretty thin. I had it for about 2.5 years with out having to replace a bulb or anything and it is on a lot. We just upgraded to a 46 inch lcd. One thing I did notice is once you go this big you def can never go back and usually end up going bigger.

The biggest thing I worry about is the inputs. Make sure whatever you have has a shitload of them esp if you don't want to spend an assload on a reciever or splitter of some kind.
