Recently one of my colleagues got busted surfing got pr0n during office hours. They even had the SCREEN CAPS of his PC showing him in action - so he was caught with this pants down.
Call me paranoid, but is there a way I can find out what the snooping program is on my office laptop? They normally go under 'stealth' mode so Ctrl-Alt-Del may not work. Or maybe a software monitoring the outbound traffic? |

It's your employer, its their computers. You shouldn't be worried in the first place. You have no grounds to stand on anyways.

Re-image your hard drive + don't connect to their VPN (if you are using it at the office, then use an air card and not their network).
Solved.

If you connect to their network, you're opening yourself up to pretty much anything.
If you're that paranoid, install a different Operation System (Ubuntu for example) for your personal use.

Dude - your laptop or not, it's THEIR NETWORK, and what employer wants their employees screwing up their network while surfing for porn, IM forums, free music, torrents or midget tossing videos?
You're also on THEIR TIME - I assume you're desiring this privacy during your time at the office? If you must surf privately while at work, take the advice above and get your own aircard and connect to the web outside your employer's network. Of course, if they have spyware on YOUR laptop, it may still screen capture while you're on your own connection and send those screenshots to your employer as soon as you connect to your employer's network anyway.. |

Get COMODO firewall, close all internet related applications like browsers and AIM, even microsoft and adobe stuff. Watch which processes have ports open and are transmitting data. comodo has a nice tool for this. Whichever process it is, kill it in task manager

Why don't you just have 2x hardrives? One for home with your stuff and one at work with the works stuff.

Hmm...
what is the legal basis over where you are. Over here (Germany / Switzerland), your employer is allowed to snoop on you, but ONLY after telling you about it. As far as I see it, if you bought the laptop, they have no right whatsoever to take screenshots 24/7 or even 8-5. It is your computer, so any software to be installed is installed on your property. Get a firewall and do not allow the snoop to exit. Fuckers. ::emp::

Are you legally obligated to allow them to put software on your computer? Did you sign a contract that says that, or verbally agree?
Are you working at home over a VPN or in their office? Are they monitoring your laptop camera, or just taking screenshots? Don't wank at the office, that's just not classy (but if you must, go to the restroom). And don't work for paranoid Big Brother motherfuckers. If they installed that shit without your consent, demand THEY remove it.

Ok... if you're working for someone else...
Work Machine = For Work Your Machine = For You IT's as simple as that. And if it's your machine, then there's nothing that says you can't enable firewalls and such after hours. You employers (to a degree of what you agreed to), can dictate what you can do during work hours, after hours, its a violation of privacy. What I'd do... probably get a cheap ass sub-300 netbook and only use that for work.

Far as screen snooping, places like odesk does that, but you're only required to transmit during the times you are billing for. If you're charging them for the hours your rubbing down the cock... that just ain't right. Quick question for ya though... as part of this agreement, are you using their internet connection where ever you go?

He never said he watches porn at work. He simply said that his colleague got busted for it and now his own lack of online privacy concerns him.
These fap-related assumptions speak volumes about the personal habits of the WF community.

If it's a wireless network at the office, connect with your phone, and download porno to that. Unless you were foolish enough to give your phone a name that makes it obviously yours, they won't know which employee is downloading porn on their phone.

Thanks guys. A couple of things -
1. No, I don't surf porn at work. Never said that anywhere in my posts! I am concerned with my online privacy - on and off work - as this is the same laptop I use outside work also. 2. I use my own wireless network - although occasionally I had to log on to the company LAN to retrieve some files on the shared network folders. 3. I found out that my colleague's laptop screen caps were taken using VNC! How do I check if it is installed on my machine? |

Usually there is an icon in the task bar, it should show up there. It's not designed to be used as a spy tool, but a remote control tool. I believe it can be set so that you can't quit it.

You can try this however... 1. Start > Run > cmd 2. netstat -n 3. check if there's a listening port on 5900, or 5800 (TCP) It's the default ports for vnc.. this can be specified to any port but it would be the first thing to check.. The only 100% safe way if your not working for geniuses in IT is running a separate OS, either on a different partition or you can boot linux off a usb..

Partition your hard drive and just boot up your alternate OS when you don't want to get monitored. Make the two partitions look identical in case they stop by - same wallpaper, some of the same programs, etc... They could just be using something as simple as Microsoft SMS if you are logging on to a company domain. I could use the remote control funtion to watch any computer on the network with it at my last job. We were supposed to need a reason to remote in to other computers though. It was against company policy to login just to see what somebody was doing. All URLs visited on the company connection were logged too.

Man, I am so happy I could never stomach an office job. Never had to deal with these issues for more than about a month. that was all I could take.
For me it wasn't a porn or lack of privacy thing. My manhood was completely threated by the idea that I had to ask for permission to use the potty. Gods forbid you leave your slave station for five fucking minutes to go take a dump. Or ten minutes, if I had Indian food the night before. |
