Fuck New keyboard?

Right now I have a Saitek Cyborg and while it's comfortable, and has nifty lighting, it doesn't work the way it was advertised.

1. When Cyborg mode is activated, you're supposed to be able to choose sections of the keyboard to highlight with different lighting or brighter lighing. Nope doesn't work.

2. Programming the thing is a bitch. It appears simple and maybe it is, but I have yet to get a single command assigned to one of the twelve "C" keys attached to the sides of the keyboard.

3. Backlight color control doesn't work. Brightness doesn't work.

4. Cyborg mode is supposed to disable Windows key combinations, but all it does is diable the Windows key. If you hit Tab + Alt by accident (happens to me all the damn time) you'll still change windows in the middle of your game.

...the list goes on.

After some digging, apparently it's barely compatible with Vista if you download and update drivers. Well fuck! Would've been nice to know a couple months ago.

I'm beginning to really hate this keyboard, but it's better than the Merc Stealth keyboard I had.

*sign*

Looking at the latest and greatest, Logitech's G19 made me drool. I haven't found really anything negative about it (other than price $200). Anybody have any gaming keyboard recommendations? Or experience with the G19?

Sir, I believe I have found the source of your problem.

Seriously, Logitech G series are the shit. I had a G15 until I broke it, but the built-in macro editor, game modes, extra function keys, etc, were all amazing and worth the $100. Now I used a Microsoft ComfortCurve, which works, but I miss my G15.

Yeah, after installing the drivers from Saitek's website, I got it working as advertised. But, I've discovered something else that I don't like: the extra functions keys are crap. Normally, you push a key on the keyboard and it performs whatever it's supposed to. Well, those stupid things perform only when they want. Light touch - it might work, hard push - it might work, beating the crap out it - might work.

Don't buy Saitek.

Yeah, Tyler, to make things worse, I don't just have Vista, I have Vista 64

i don't get the appeal of the starship enterprise keyboards that gamers dig. but then again i see my keyboard as a device for work.

your last keyboard had a bunch of bullshit features that didn't even work right. what's so horrible about a simple, effective design?

I like lots of buttons! Plus, my nice simple keyboard is on my kid's computer, so it's gone.

Yes, it is a tool for work, so it needs to fulfill that mission first and foremost. Work-wise the Saitek is just fine. However, when I relax I enjoy playing PC games, and would like a tool that can do that as well. What's so horrible about that?

For serious business, you need a serious keyboard: Model M keyboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you've never tried a keyboard with mechanical switches, I highly recommend that you do. There's no good reason to pay over $100 for keyboards that suck at their most fundamental function (typing) -- especially when you can buy a Model M for $50 or less on eBay that will probably last you forever. They are loud though, which is kind of a game killer depending on where you work. I'm looking to buy this for my day job since it is relatively quiet compared to the clacking of a Model M.

If you really want to geek out on high quality keyboards, check out geekhack.org.

Anyone know of a keyboard Identical to the Apple Aluminum one?

Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - Apple Store (U.S.)

I love this keyboard and the way the keys are spaced out, but I would like one that was designed for windows, instead of using one that is designed for mac on windows...

I have a Logitech Wave since when I got it (and possibly still) it was the best wireless Logitech desktop you could get for the Mac. Not really a gaming keyboard but works really well. Just wish the mouse was more like the mx518 I have on my laptop.

Optimus Maximus keyboard

hell yeah, OLED keyboard. you can modify the keys to do -anything you want- with the software, even write in different scripts, do automations, etc. kind of breaks the $200 limit ($1600!), but was worth posting just for fun.

LOL! Yeah, I know the feeling! After getting the drivers installed, I'm not as quick to hate this Saitek. It's still not worth $90 IMO, but then again I shouldn't just walk into Best Buy and buy stuff that I haven't researched. My own dumb fault there.

One thing that I'm really picky about is the tactile feedback from the keys. This keyboard has stiffer keys than the Merc Stealth, which I don't care for. Just "feel" wise, I like the keyboard that came with my Gateway. Very light, not stiff at all. I'm seriously thinking about just getting another Gateway keyboard and giving up on my search for the ultimate "everything" keyboard.

Maybe a week or so. At first you'll type slower and make some typos but once you get used to it you'll start typing even faster than before because the keys are better positioned.
