Schmidt, the former campaign guru for McCain who is today a partner in Sacramento-based Mercury Public Affairs LLC, made the comments to CNN's Anderson Cooper on the Sunday broadcast of "60 Minutes." (Watch the segment here.)

The revelations about Palin, and Schmidt's detailed thoughts on the campaign, have come to light in a new book about the campaign called "Game Change" by veteran political reporters John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

The authors said Team McCain's quick hit choice of Sarah Palin was made in desperation, days before the GOP National Convention after it was clear McCain's first choice of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman would be a non-starter with Republicans. Schmidt said McCain campaign manager Rick Davis searched for possible female candidates on Google and "You Tube." And Palin, who popped up and originally looked like a brilliant stroke of luck, quickly proved problematic.

"In the immediate aftermath of her selection, it was clear to us that we had a lot of work to do,'' Schmidt said, adding that among them was to educate her in "a broad scale of national security issues."

Schmidt allowed that "she gave a great convention speech'' and the team came out of the GOP National Convention with a boost.

"Her focus was extraordinary, working 15, 16 hours a day,'' he said. "We were very pleased with the result.''

But he said it went downhill from there, especially after Palin didn't do her homework for the big Katie Couric interview on CBS. "The reason that interview was a failure was that she did not prepare for it,'' he said. "I don't think Katie Couric asked a single unfair question in that interview."

And then there was the factually-challenged Sarah, "numerous instances that she said things that were not accurate,'' and which the campaign had to deal with, he said.

Example: the ethics investigations and its aftermath in Alaska, which Schmidt said she mischaracterized. "She went out and said that this report completely exonerates me, and it didn't. It was the equivalent of saying down is up, and up is down..proveably, demonstrably untrue,'' he said.

As practice sessions loomed for the coming vice presidential debate, Schmidt said that it was looking to be "a debacle of historic proportions,'' and Palin was totally overwhelmed.

Repeatedly, he said, she kept calling Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden "Obiden'' in the debate practice sessions. In the end, he said, she decided just call him "Joe."

And, she did.

If I was a Republican - and I'm not - the LAST person I'd want for a spokesperson is someone who "fits the mold" (not a Democrat either by the way).

If was in charge of the RNC I would be out in force right now trying to pick up the traditionally left African American and Hispanic vote. Statistically speaking those communities are very likely to be religious and socially traditional - that actually aligns quite well with a lot of the Republican mantra. I think the Republicans could finally be making a real change to their core constituency and growing with a young, diverse crowd if they were trying.

They're not though. Instead they are doing the "circular firing squad" method the Democrats did for 10 years or so.

Besides Fox, what other right leaning tv news station is on TV? Are there any?

Fox pretty much has the entire right market to themselves. The left is divided between the other channels. It's just my theory, but I'm pretty sure if you add the audience size of all the left leaning stations the total is pretty close (if not more) to the size of Fox's audience.

This would explain Fox's "ease" of success (just filling a void) and me not caring if a few left leaning old media stations go down.

Also, it's sad that you have to weigh the success of your ideology by the ad dollars that News Corp. makes or the size of their audience. One is irrelevant and the other is well, irrelevant.

Another thing, if you were to judge Fox news by how well informed its viewership is, it would FAIL (far below gov't run media, NPR).

Last thing, Fox is a channel for the voters that want politicians to be "just like them". When they see Palin it makes them feel comfortable.

The Palins are actually really nice people IRL- I met Sarah this past summer briefly, but have met her husband a few times now in Alaska (I fish in Bristol Bay during the summers, in the same Bay they keep a set net site). Todd always struck me as an Alaskan's Alaskan. He was really out of place in a suit and tie on National TV.

Palin added shock value and reinvigorated the GOP at a time where it needed something really different than an old white man running against a young black man with all the media on his side. Was she the right choice? I don't know. I think if she hadn't borked up her national tv appearances she certainly did resonate with an audience of midwestern moms that have never been pandered to politically before.

Quitting her post, whatever your political proclivity, is future campaign suicide. I think the fact she left her job as AK Governor at the height of her popularity up there will prove more problematic in a future campaign attempt than anything she has or could say as a pundit.

phillian Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: Philly Posts: 452 iTrader: 2 / 100%	The Palins are actually really nice people IRL- I met Sarah this past summer briefly, but have met her husband a few times now in Alaska (I fish in Bristol Bay during the summers, in the same Bay they keep a set net site). Todd always struck me as an Alaskan's Alaskan. He was really out of place in a suit and tie on National TV. Palin added shock value and reinvigorated the GOP at a time where it needed something really different than an old white man running against a young black man with all the media on his side. Was she the right choice? I don't know. I think if she hadn't borked up her national tv appearances she certainly did resonate with an audience of midwestern moms that have never been pandered to politically before. Quitting her post, whatever your political proclivity, is future campaign suicide. I think the fact she left her job as AK Governor at the height of her popularity up there will prove more problematic in a future campaign attempt than anything she has or could say as a pundit.
