did not watch. don't get why they don't use the simple high-voltage high-current jolt like in many humane slaughterhouses that kills on contact (not just renders them unconscious), or the quick mallet to the head like the old days. this seems unnecessarily gruesome, inhumane, and also not very cost-effective with all of the machinery involved.

call me a pussy but this is why I don't mind getting meat from a place that has humane treatment, even if it costs more.

I have no problem eating meat - but inhumane treatment of animals is wrong. That's one job I couldn't take with a clean conscience.

Meet looks better and tastes better if the blood is drained while the animal is still alive. Some "brands" even go to extra lengths to make sure to drain as much blood as possible before the animal dies.

If the heart stops pumping immediately, then meat/muscle won't be as "even" and nice looking. I'm not sure how to describe it actually.

But that's the reason they don't just use electrical shock to kill the animal in an instant.

Pretty fucked up, but that's life. Such approach simply makes the end product more appealing to the target audience.

Just so you guys know, the vast majority of animals slaughtered in the US does not go down like that. That is an example of a Kosher slaughter... where the animal must be conscious during slaughter according to Jewish dietary laws.

In most slaughterings, the animal is rendered unconscious w/ a bolt gun, then bled out. Peta (and the like) get a hold of these videos, then spam them out to the public like this is what goes on in 100% of slaughterhouses. That's just not the case. This is just an example of silly archaic religion adhering to idiotic practices that made sense hundreds or thousands of years ago, but make absolutely no sense in current times.

Personally, I blame religion for that unnecessarily brutal slaughter.

I live in an area with a lot of ranching and I've never seen a cow slaughtered like what was in the video and it didn't seem like a very economical way to kill them not to mention it got a lot of blood all over the hides which is usually something they try to prevent. I think Kylier is probably on to the real explanation.

The reality is most ranchers treat their cows like their own children and invest a lot into them and really do care about them like pets, even the big ranches. Vegans watch these unique videos and seem to jump to a lot of conclusions about how cattle and pigs are treated instead of going to an actual ranch and seeing for themselves. Cows although destined to die for meat live a pretty sweet life and although preserving the meat and hides is a huge factor in how they die, a lot of research goes into making sure they die in a humane way because typically ranches are family businesses and kids are usually present which goes the same for slaughter houses.

This is why I purchased steak directly from local grass fed ranchers. At least they seem authentic when they preach how cows releases toxins when living and killed in a stressful state.

One downside about grass fed beef is the leanness. I miss 45 aged steaks with all that fatty goodness.

Free range chickens, turkeys, cows, and pigs all bought in long island, ny. The trip is about 2-3 hours but purchasing 60 lbs of meat helps make the trip less tedious
