Checkthisout 1GBit/second Fiber Optic Broadband Care of Google Inc.

Think big with a gig: Our experimental fiber network

Apparently they are large enough to tell the FCC to fuck off and build their own network.

That looks ok, but of course, I would wonder if they are going to be looking at the data too as a marketing tool.

some apartments in nl carry ge [gigabit ethernet]...

pros;

self-employed SMBs benefit greatly

many entrepreneurial openings [likely, the ISP will specifically forbid commercial use of a residential connection though..]

cons;

malware thrives on these connections. ge netranges being inherently small, expect worldwide port/scan/intrusion attempts nearly once per 30 seconds.

people clogging it up with huge [warez] traffic, dragging bad press and everything involved along.

but to people with productive purposes, it's very very useful.

We have 1Gb/s fiber optics internet commercially avaliable here in Portugal (only in some areas) for 250 euros/ month. I'm probably going to get it in the next months.

never will I use Google as my ISP due to privacy concerns and advertising concerns - but maybe this will propel other ISPs.

When a company needs to have a slogan that's "Don't be evil." .. should raise some concerns. It's like girl meeting a guy who has a post-it note on his mirror reminding him "Don't be a rapist."

Google won't be your ISP, they are just providing the infrastructure, multiple ISP's will use it.

Like they aren't controlling the way we see and use the internet already? They're a data crunching monster.

The article Headline,"Google to Offer Fast Broadband as Trial to Spur Providers."

Google to Offer Superfast Net Service - NYTimes.com

Two words: data mining

Productively of-course 1 gigabit of connectivity will provide a completely new generation of television, browsing, applications, etc. Imagine with that much bandwidth you can expect tv tunner boxes not to have a cable connection but an RJ-45 connection which would be connected to the Gigabit networks. Download and watch blueray on the fly, but you can already imagine ads popping up while your watching a show. That would suck.

Great point; I disagree with most of Google's practices these days, but with the state of broadband in America, a good kick in the balls is what some of these ISP''s need.
