Think big with a gig: Our experimental fiber network
Apparently they are large enough to tell the FCC to fuck off and build their own network. |

some apartments in nl carry ge [gigabit ethernet]...
pros; self-employed SMBs benefit greatly many entrepreneurial openings [likely, the ISP will specifically forbid commercial use of a residential connection though..] cons; malware thrives on these connections. ge netranges being inherently small, expect worldwide port/scan/intrusion attempts nearly once per 30 seconds. people clogging it up with huge [warez] traffic, dragging bad press and everything involved along. but to people with productive purposes, it's very very useful. |

We have 1Gb/s fiber optics internet commercially avaliable here in Portugal (only in some areas) for 250 euros/ month. I'm probably going to get it in the next months.

Two words: data mining
Productively of-course 1 gigabit of connectivity will provide a completely new generation of television, browsing, applications, etc. Imagine with that much bandwidth you can expect tv tunner boxes not to have a cable connection but an RJ-45 connection which would be connected to the Gigabit networks. Download and watch blueray on the fly, but you can already imagine ads popping up while your watching a show. That would suck.
