Pictures 2 File Cabinets + Door = Best Desk Ever

Call me a cheap ass, but this is a good idea for any of you looking for a cheap desk. I'm turning a second bedroom into another office for the next month or so (brother moved out), but didn't feel like buying a completely new desk. Turns out I like this so much I'll be selling my "real desk" on craigslist next week since I'll be moving and don't want to haul it down 3 stories.

Total price? $70. Two cheap file cabinets and one hollow core door. Hell, the light in the picture is almost 3 times as much... Anyway, it's strong as hell, has a ton of room and can be broken down and moved in less than a minute.

Again, it's not going to wow anyone, but the amount of space and ease of moving the thing make up for it. And it'd be a great way for a new startup to save some cash if you have a few employees.

It looks really low. How do you manage to sit, or put a chair there with arm rests.

Yeah, I've been coming to that realization a lot lately. First with a $40 chair working better than my Herman Miller and now this. I've had these three desks over the past 3 years and they have all sucked in one way or another: one, two, three.

It's tall enough for me... there's probably 6 inches from the bottom of the desk to my knees and I'm 6'1''. But my current chair doesn't have arms, so...

Guess it must be the angle of the photo, or I am bad with depth perception.

Regarding, Herman Miller, I just switched to their chairs, and it's got to be the best chair I've ever worked from. I've used 8-10 different chairs in the past 4 years, and since I switched to Miller, I don't have the same back pains I used to have, plus it keeps me in a good posture.

I roll ghetto desks. 2 6-foot costco tables put up in a L shape. Crazy desk space. I have 2 mini file cabinets that fit underneath as well.

I think I'm going to do something similar, except I'm going to be standing with something to lean up against (like a wall, but more ergonomic)

High-back chairs with arms just don't work for me. I started a thread last month and ended up finding this chair which has ended my back pain. /knock on wood

I work in an office with all door desks, they're fucking great. You can get a door at home depot for like $27, the handle hole works well as a wire guide, and you can paint them whatever color you want.

You can also get cheap table legs at IKea if you want adjustable height

Had something similar in my college years, except I had cinder blocks (ballin'!) instead of filing cabinets. Got the job done just the same.

This has been popular to do for a long time (2 file cabinets, 1 door). It's good with a solid core door too. Also, the more heavy it is the less it will shift around. Hollow core doors these days can feel really cheap and flimsy, but I guess it just depends on what hollow core you use.

i have had this type of the desk in the past and I still roll ghetto.. instead of the door desk though, I have upgraded to one of those old school plywood folding desks that like you would find in a school cafeteria or church dinner on Sunday.

I need a new chair, lately every single night around 8pm I feel the pain in my upper mid back and have to take a 800mg Tylenol or Darvocet to ease the pain some.

It doesn't shift around at all. In fact, it's a bit hard to pull it off. I used two small pieces of velcro on each side and it's strong enough to lift the file cabinets off the ground if they are empty.

Nope, it's complete and hasn't had anything cut into it. You can get them at lowes for like $20... a little cheaper because you cut the holes, etc, yourself. Perfect desk size.

You honestly are the cheapest bastard I've ever seen lol.

Seriously what's the point in making money if you don't spend any of it.

Not having to worry about money is my only concern. I really don't care about buying things (for the most part), I just don't want to worry about money. And for the most part, I don't.

In fact, I'm moving in a month and my goal is to get everything I own to fit into five 18 gallon rubbermaid bins. I've manage to make it down to 15 so far and after my next week of craigslist giveaways, I think I'll easily hit the goal.

Basically, I hate the feeling of having "stuff" that anchors me anywhere. I'm happiest when I can think to myself... "If my apartment burned down today and I lost everything, would I care" ... and my answer is "nope. I can replace everything I own in a day."

Basically, I hate the feeling of having "stuff" that anchors me anywhere. I'm happiest when I can think to myself... "If my apartment burned down today and I lost everything, would I care" ... and my answer is "nope. I can replace everything I own in a day."

Just bought a couple of the Ikea gallant desks. (Love em - nice and sturdy and adjustable height).

Basically it's just a finished piece of wood. A metal frame that screws into it, and a couple of t shaped legs.

You could always buy the frame and the legs and put anything on top.

My FAVORITE desk is in the garage as a work space now. It's the top of an executives desk (ya know - like the 3,000 or more dollar desks) on plastic saw horse legs. All chewed up from the tools and what not now.... but I used to have it anchored to the wall in my old house as a desk.

I beat you to it :P

Everything I own fits in a MESSENGER BAG -- no, it's not a hyperbole.

In the past 6 months, I donate all my books, clothes, computers, trinklets and doo-dads.

Essentially all I own is my wallet, phone, laptop, important paper documents and 2 sets of clothes.

Minimalism FTW.

Anyhow, I have no problem with people that like to save money, but like you seem to brag about it a lot. It's just as bad as people that start threads to show of all their cool new gadgets and ballin shit. Your set up should have just gone into the enormous thread we have up already.

How about this... if you see a future thread with my name attached to it, just don't click on it. Then life will be happily ever after.

And I don't "brag" about anything. I just thought someone might find this useful.

Cheap? That's the most expensive door/file cabinet desk I've ever seen.

Subigo: One benefit of a "city" is free craigslist. There are many doors, file cabinets, and actual desks available. (I guess I'm outing myself as a broke-ass but I love browsing free craigslist for furniture and household stuff.)

Gjeez. The typical WF comment fuckery starts again. Someone posts something and the thread direction goes wild. Can't you guys just STFU and discuss the issue at hand? People here have obviously much time to study implications of every picture and text posted and feel the need in explicitly stating them as well - all the time.

I simply find that as irony, upper banner showing maserati cars and then thread about $70 cheap ass desk.

Okay, okay, desk is pretty cool, I am not saying anyone should obtain $700 desk or like that, but few low hudred desk would be allright and at least it will not brokes sometimes with pc and stuff to floor like that one.

Think about it...does a desk really matter in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. Anyone of us could sit on the ground with a laptop on a milk crate and probably be more productive than sitting at some hot shit desk. I personally like his inventiveness. In the end, he's got a flat place where he can work, period. Hard to believe he's getting static for posting a picture of his desk.

Because there are people on WF masturbating to porn and fingering their butts whilst trolling WF instead of slanging yayo.

And it is here when we realize the difference between "cheap" and "innovative". I group Subigo with the second of those.

my first office was all closet doors sitting on top of sawhorses.. that was about 10 years ago and i'm sure ive spent thousands on office furniture since then at various offices and at home, and i still miss that setup.

I enjoy Subigo's posts and give him props for his inventiveness.

I do have a suggestion though buddy.. maybe "Thrifty Hosting" would be a better name. lol.
