So what do you think of Windows Vista?
Ive been playing around with it for about a week and really think the overall look is sweet, its got that web 2.0ish look to it. So far I have not run into any problems, but im sure underlying security and other issues will arise in the future. Would I run out and upgrade from XP, no, but seeings that It came bundled with a computer I bought, Im enjoying the new look and features....... What is your overall opinion of Vista? Have you run into any issues with Vista yet? ..... |

It's very smooth on my AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 1.6GHz + 1GB RAM. Also, if your running low on RAM from a big program, it gets rid of Aero in realtime - uber efficient.
A standard install of Home Premium takes 10-12GBs and with no programs open it uses a few hundred megs (200-300 i think) of RAM. Vista is kick ass. Also, be sure to check out the speech recognition - it's really cool.

I didn't notice it being a resource hog, but it does bug you to death to authorize every little semi-risky procedure (installing apps, changing network settings, etc.)
This feature is perfect for your aunt suzy, but I'd prefer a more advanced mode that wouldn't prompt me each time. Maybe it exists and I haven't found it yet. After being on it for a week my conclusion is that overall it looks sweet, but not really much different from XP. Why this took 5 years to create, I have no idea. |

hahaha I love MAC, I'm sorry I just love the comercials they come up with about PC, and since I have not used windows vista yet I thought I would share with everyone the new MAC VS PC (Windows Vista Edition).
They however called the episode Surgery if that is not the first one to pop up. I think everyone here will get a kick out of it.

Also, a lot of MAC users think they have had a cool interface long before Vista. lol. OSX doesn't look half as cool as Vista's Aero.

I have had both mac's and pc's. I'm running Vista right now. It totally stole all of os x's features, which isn't a bad thing. Apple stole their quick launch and widgets from other third party developers. It's just a big circle of idea stealing. Vista is a convenient upgrade, nothing groundbreaking.

Doing troubleshooting on notebooks since it was released I can say: even when a company has tried their hardest to get their hardware working with it, you'll still have tonnes of drivers not working right, the computer's never going to run as fast as it did with XP--it won't run thaaaat bad, but it'll run slower. And you'll basically only be able to use the stuff that came on the computer and a few programs like Firefox, because NOTHING ELSE is compatable yet.
And have fun with the new router you'll need for wireless. That said, it'll be nice when everyone else catches up with MS.

The ONLY compatibility problem I have had so far on my HP-Vista laptop, was Steam. But a recent update fixed it.

I find that Aero is not that great. Why do I need 10px borders around everything just because they're clear? Vista may be more obnoxiously styled but Mac OS X definitely looks better, the effects are more polished and get this, they improve the user experience/usability. That said I use Vista over XP now. I'm going to get a MacBook Pro ASAP though. |

Depends what you are doing. Because of some driver issues, it can be slower for some applications.
In terms of the OS itself, it is a lot faster than XP. I have been using Vista since I built a new box, and have really enjoyed it. I have had a few random re-boots that signal not quite all the way where it needs to be, but in terms of speed and performance, booting up getting into the os etc it kills XP. I also have a 4gig flash drive I use with Readyboost which can help performance a bit too. People mistakenly think Vista uses more resources than XP. The reality is with their better caching Vista uses your memory better. It not only keeps track of which programs you use, but when you use them. So if you run some program every day first thing in the morning, it knows this and will have it cached in memory when you go to bring it up it will come up very quickly. Leaving DRM issues aside, I have been pretty happy with Vista so far, and I am not one to normally jump on the OS bandwagon early. I have 2 gigs of ram and use the readyboost feature, but for anyone under that, I definately recommend it. It basically acts as a smart cache where it can access small bits of data much faster than retrieving them from the hard drive. I have seen tests where people with 512 megs of ram saw up to 25% performance increase with readyboost. My last vista driver just became available yesterday too, so everything is working pretty well now.

You can always check here Windows XP vs. Vista: The Benchmark Rundown | Tom's Hardware to see if it makes the software you use faster or slower.
