How to block/report genuine spam?

Thread title is kind of confusing, so let me explain.

I get tons of email that is spam in the truest sense... Not something I opted-in for, and not even a partner of some place that I gave my email to. Usually spam messages have a disclaimer at the bottom ("You're getting this because we work with some company you gave your email to blah blah blah") and a place to unsubscribe, but these are usually junk for prescription medications, usually with one line that contains only a link. Is there a way to report or block these messages? They're really annoying - so much so that I want to go out of my way to stop them.

At best you can block patterns of commonly received types of emails. But it'll be hard going after botnet based spam like matt mentioned since they tend to come from legitimate senders (via a bot).

What are you using however for a mail client and mail server?

Simply run your email through a Gmail account and your spam will disappear. I use Gmail for domains, but you can also simply forward all your email from your domains to a gmail account (googlemail in Europe). Then just use Gmail in a browser or Thunderbird as a mail client to read your Gmail account.

Google does a fantastic job of removing spam and virus emails.

I keep getting emails from the place and friends of some forex shit. Not even sure how I may have opted in but i've opted out about 20 times now and still keep getting them. I'm close to sueing those fuckers now.

Some of those only use the 'opt-out' method to verify that you're a real person receiving email. I usually prefer to do this instead:

Karl: It happens on both my Hotmail and Gmail accounts. Obviously, they go in the spam folder, but it's annoying to receive them nonetheless. I'm one of those who checks their spam folder when they see a new email, just like it's the inbox. Habit, I guess.

Creativepart: Congrats on first post, though I'm a little lost on what you're talking about.

Hi Thanks,
You can use Gmail for Domains to take over all your email chores -- but perhaps you are not hosting your own email on your domain.

I guess what you are saying, even though your spam is filtered you notice when it arrives.

Are you using a mail client like Outlook or Win Mail to bring mail from a Gmail and Yahoo mail account to your computer? If so, it's notifying you when the Junk mail arrives. If you're using POP3 mail switch to IMAP (and Mozilla Thunderbird while you are at it). Then you won't get any notice when junk mail arrives. It's still saved on Google at your Gmail account for you to review every few weeks, just not downloaded to your computer.

Thanks for clarification. I'm not hosting my own email on my own domains or anything -- Just using regular Hotmail and Gmail accounts. The spam still goes to the Spam folder, but I'd rather not receive it at all.

1) find a better use of your time
2) hate the game
3) it's probably not even SPAM (by law), if it has an opt-out link and a physical address..

There's more qualifications than that like if they don't honor the opt out then it's spam also. And others.

So you check your spam folder and become angry when, for some odd reason, it actually has spam in it? LoL, how in the world do you find the time to go through your spam folder? I get over 700 emails per day in mine.

I think I'm about ready for a clean email address because of the spam I'm getting. I was thinking about making a switch before it got bad, now I just have more of a reason to.
