optimising a phpBB forum

Is there anything that I can do to optimse a phpBB forum? I now have about 1500 posts in my forum, but it is still not ranking well. About the only thing ive done to optimize it is changing the title tag.

Is there any tool that I can use to get posts indexed, Ive heard this very hard to achieve with a phpBB forum.

Anyone know any tricks to it, or am I shit out of luck here?

Thaks Jer

Chromate is a splendid one to behold
Have you made your forum's URLs search engine friendly? Are they getting indexed at all, or just ranking badly?

You can get some code to make them search engine friendly at able2know.com

Go straight to the source:

Baiscally, you have this: www.forumname.com/viewtopic.php?t=dfdaf3843
You want this: www.forumname.com/words_are_better.html

These are links to an outside forum, but they are tutorials on the developers forum - I don't believe this would violate this forums rules. But, delete this post if it does.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/ is a fantastic resource site for phpBB, and I'm sure you can find what you are looking for there.

If you want my humble opinion, I would suggest making the switch from phpBB to vBulletin. With the time it takes to fix every single bug in phpBB, you will find that you actually save money by purchasing the vBulletin license, that is, if you want to go longterm with this site. vBulletin has also been designed with SEO in mind so you should see your pages indexing better. ..I refuse to use phpBB, although it is free there are just too many exploits and problems plus you've got a lot more control over a vBulletin forum than you do a phpBB forum... Hope this helps and doesn't confuse the situation

I'll second that, phpBB is a big red target for hackers as well!

Im pretty cheap, cuz I dont have much to play with. after bills and taking care of my family I dont have much left for myself to play with. Hopefully that will change some day.

I dont think they are getting indexed at all. Ill have to look in to making search engine friendly urls!

Thanks for the replys

Jeff is a name known to all
jerxs, l've installed this mod on one of my forums and it works beautifully:
http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/2040

Other than the obvious making the URLs SE safe, this mod removes a lot of the un necessary links from the forums, and the index page (such as the links to users profiles, and "who's online" stats) from the SEs when they're cruising your board. I installed this on one of my 6k user boards about a month ago, and have had around 500 newly indexed pages because of the change, give it a whirl.

There was another one l found a while back that actually redirected the SEs to a stripped down archive (like vbb's "lite version". I just looked in google for it and couldn't find it, but if you need it l could spend more than 10 seconds looking

Best regards,

The best way to optimse phpbb is to Import your database into vbulletin & delete the phpbb folder.

phpbb is just a huge "kick me" sign on your ass for spammers & script kiddies.

i agree, there has been numerous hack attempt that was detected on one of my popular phpBB site. it's not unusual if one or more "critical" discussion suddenly dissapears! :o

i'll be moving from the the old webhost. and there's a big chance i'll also migrate the forum into either SMF, punBB or vBulletin. there's just too much bad experience...

Your directory stucture looks like it's set up fine now. That should definitely help. I would argue that since your forum is just starting out, you need to find other methods of bringing traffic in for now. You may get indexed as is, but you'll likely be far from prime real estate in the search engines without traffic and thus, links.

Maybe you should be telling more people about that Ipod giveaway? It was enough to entice me.

wait... is mediaswim the same forum you're talking about at the beginning of this thread? You said 1500 posts, but mediaswim seems to have far less. Did I get things mixed up?

I decided to test the mod on a new forum I launched yesterday

mediaswim.com, but really dont know what to look for, its structure looks the same as my other forums.

What should I be looking for?

I know its a dumb question.

I am going to spend the next few days promoting the Ipod give away.

Thank you jer

hmmm... i think something's changed on your forum since I was there earlier. The links seemed to be SE friendly when I was there before, and now they're not. What did you change?

Yeah, but wasn't that done before I made my initial post saying everything was working fine? Your links are definitely not SE friendly again. Is that all you're looking to change? Because there should be an option in your admin pages for SE friendly URL's that requires no mod at all.

I thnk I am going to backtrack and remove the second "step" in the mod. I think something whent wrong there.

I have not come across any setting in the admin pannel for se friendly pages. You would think that it would just be standard in the script, but heck its free so im not going to complain, just work with it.
