50 Cent sues over 'Shoot the Rapper'

Fri Jul 20, 7:29 PM ET

Rapper 50 Cent sued an Internet advertising company for $1 million Friday, claiming it illegally used his image in a game where the player pretends to shoot him.

The game, called "Shoot the Rapper," shows 50 Cent walking back and forth in an ad across the top of a Web page while the viewer is encouraged to shoot him by aiming and clicking with the mouse, court papers say.

A successful shot results in a misty cloud of red, and the viewer is then directed to another Web page where the ad firm's client sells goods and services, according to the lawsuit.

The rapper's lawyer, Peter Raymond, says the game doesn't use 50 Cent's name, but "it looks like him, and there's no doubt the character is intended to be him."

The lawsuit names Traffix Inc. of Pearl River, N.Y., as the defendant. A lawyer for the company, Ezio Scaldaferri, said he had not been served with the papers and could not comment.

The rapper, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson, is a well-known victim of gun violence, Raymond said. He said the advertising company is using 50 Cent's likeness without his permission and suggesting that he endorses the game.

"For all those reasons, he is personally offended," the lawyer said.
Raymond said the rapper learned about the ad after one of his management people saw the it on a MySpace page.

The rapper's lawsuit asks at least $1 million in actual damages, a permanent injunction against the use of his image without permission, and unspecified punitive damages.

Hahaha!! That ad is kinda old though, and it's not like he's some really good guy with a fantastic image. Someone DID shoot him 9 times, and he did make songs about it. Doh!

Fuck 50 cent. What a crybaby bitch. Oh, poor baby. Poor 50 cent. Open your eyes, 50.... that's what happens when you're famous and get your name in the spotlight... other people are going to use it for monetary gain.

Maybe he'd like to go back to the streets and sell crack like he did before Eminem gave his sorry ass a chance? What a fuckin piece of shit.

Done? Not. But, I have heard several years back that he is real protective of his name and image. This was way back when I didn't know a thing about Internet Marketing.

Who is 50 cents? I assume he is a rapper but I've never heard of him. I'd venture a guess that since the ad has been displayed on the internet around the world that most people who have seen the ad don't even know who 50 cents is or was.

Funny story..
Years ago, I was assisting my uncle who DJs at a high school party. Some overweight floozy looking girl walked up and asked for 50 cent. Looking at her, it wouldn't have been a surprise for her to be so dumb as to awkwardly ask the DJ for $.50. So my uncle put her off to continue setting up by saying 'Yeah, I think so, out in the car.'

Months later we realized she was requesting 50 Cent and not 2 quarters.

He owned a large stake in Vitamin Water, so I doubt he needs to sell any CDs. At least not financially. Everything is for ego and image purposes at this point.
