A College website

Hey guys, I am planning on creating a website for my college. Now I want it to have some really cool features (the usual would be there like a blog, sub domains, subscription to newsletter), but I want to create something that will make students want to be a part of it (so far all I can think of is a type of forum/ social network framework). Anything else that would be really useful in getting alumni and present students to share tips, stories etc?

I had the idea of also creating a type of online yearbook thing segregated batch by batch. Each profile could be controlled by the college as well as the student who's profile it is. Is there any particular script for such a yearbook sort of feature?

That’s a tall order trying to please all potential users associated with a college.

I’d suggest having a calendar of events page & a link from the front that goes to those social events.

Is this a supplement to an existing website for the college? If not, then I’d make sure you have the essentials like links to the different schools within the college, a portal via which students can access their college email, links to important info like deadline dates & tuition. I’d think all that would supersede the cool features.

You mean you want to invent a facebook?

The best way to ensure the students are going to use it is to sell the idea to the instructors. Then the students will be forced to use it.

Hold contests on the site and give away free stuff. College kids LOVE free stuff.

Yea, I'm trying to branch away from the free stuff, but I want the kids to start contributing to the website

I like the calendar idea, and yes it is a supplement for the existing site. I found this one site hMAG, Hoboken Lifestyle Magazine (it has nice features, it makes use of buddypress, but I think that it is customized was trying to find it online with no luck!)

Yup selling that would be the big issue, I'm hoping that the instructors are willing to use the site more. I wanted to implement a alumni type feature, any ideas?

It appears a little strange to be asking advice on a forum for the development of a college website.

You can use a combination of software's to do what you want.

I would suggest using wordpress, Jooma or Drupal, and an LMS.

- For your content management such as news and blogs, can't beat wordpress.
- You can utilize a social network extension for Joomla such as JomSocial as well as several other feature extensions to go with it.
-For back-end features for students and teachers to interact, you will want to use Moodle, Blackboard, or something similar.

For something like this, you are going to want to be very heavy on the planning and wireframing. What budget are you working with and what kind of talent does your team have?

You could start by geting one student and one faulty member from each department to sprearhead whatever you decide to do. Actually, getting students involved from the beginning in ideas and the development of the site would make them feel invested and more likely to participate.

I would have to go with this, get the faculty to give you some notes that can be posted on the site and you can get it to to hit home with the kids

Contact these guys and ask them to sell you the source code for ConnectU

If I were a student at your college I probably wouldn't bother submitting anything without an incentive first. Free stuff would reallyhelp convince more people to sumit things you need, even if they had to get a lot of points (from submitting stuff) before they got the free stuff.

Free stuff contests, promotions, gift cards/food coupons. Also interact and include Facebook page and a twitter account

Why don't you try boonex dolphin, it has all the features for social networking/community website. I am sure you will get what you looking for.

Beside this you can use OS date with all the customized features which can easily be integrated within your website.
