Affiliate Product Sites - Gaining in the SERPs

I know many of you simple run affiliate offers through PPC campaigns, which I am also trying to do...

If you are running a site that sells products through an affiliate program like CJ how do you get up in the SERPs when the majority of your content is links to products offsite. Also, how do you combat "page freshness" issues with a site like that?

I know that getting backlinks will help, etc. But is it wise to add a blog to the site or maybe RSS news in the sidebar of every page?

I rank really well because the majority of my content isn't links to other sites. Just increase your content to outgoing links ratio I guess... Add a blog or maybe a reviews section for the products where you write reviews.
