So my website is up and running and I've had 13 visitors so far, so yay :D

Now, I'm running PPC with google adwords and I want to employ some SEO techniques, and after reading and searching around, I found that backlinking is highly effective in getting your page to rise in the page ranks organically.

I understand that backlinking is basically having Site A link to Site B and Back to Site A or something along those lines.

So now, how do I put this into practice in the real world? I have the url of my website.. now what do I do with it?

I've been visiting other blogs related to my niche and writing comments and putting my website's url in the URL textbox, but not in the actual comment. Is this how it's done? Cuz once the comment is submitted, all you see is my name and my comment, but my url is not there..

Basically, how do I backlink?

Easiest way is to pay some Indian dude on the buy sell trade section to do a couple thousand manual directory submissions... Or you can do them yourself.

This is true to a point. Also important is the quality of the site linking to yours and the anchor text that is used. Anchor text is the words that are hyperlinked to your page. You'd rather have your link say "the product you sell" rather than "click here" because the first one sends context to the search engines about what the link actually describes.

What you describe is called reciprocal linking. A links to B and B links back to A. Lots of people do this but it's not the only way to get links as you can get links from sites without linking back to them.

This is true but you should try doing them yourself so you can figure out what you're doing.

Try searching here and on the search engines for things like "link building," "backlinks," "linking strategy," etc. You'll find plenty of ideas.

You don't have to get back links from other peoples websites, you can build up your own link wheel, which is basicly a network of web 2.0 websites, with your unique content and links for 'read more' and other links to your other web 2.0 websites and of course back to your root site. You can easily build 10 back links from 10 web 2.0 websites, which using web 2.0 websites get indexed very quickly and have high page ranks, supplying you know what your doing, but once you start link wheels, you can build up many web 2.0 websites and obviously easily increase your back links. :)

How does Google Search know whether your site is a web 2.0 vs a WP site vs static html? I'm assuming they must somehow know this in order to give preference to web 2.0 sites.

Im actually wondering the same thing. I keep reading about how google "looks for this", "knows that", etc etc...I never realized search engines were capable of so much.
