On the firing line
just like the title

Is it worth bothering to set up my own nameservers or just use the ones provided by the host?

In otherwords:

ns1.MY-DOMAIN.com

vs.

ns1.rackspace.com

Advantages? Disadvantages?

It makes you less likely to be shut down if you are spaming. Some people don't check who owns the IPs, and go straight to the place listed for the name servers.

Also, similar to the previous point, I've seen some tracking scripts figure out how many websites are listed on a server by tracking the total domains on a name server instead of looking at the IP.

Aside from looking more professional or like a separate website, there really isn't much benefit that I've seen.

Okay. Well, I'm not mailing from my servers, so that's not an issue. And since, they're dedi servers, it's pretty easy to figure out how many domains are there based on a variety of searches.

So, it boils down to professionalism and vanity. I can live with that.

Unless you specifically need your own, I would recommend against it. They aren't all *that* hard to maintain, but it's just one more thing you need to deal with. You're much less likely to run into issues with DNS being your single point of failure if you leave that to your provider.
