Hi, I'm about to start building an authority site but there's one thing that's nagging a bit...

When I research the topic I see people mention that Wordpress is the shit and blah blah blah, web 2.0 and all that stuff. And that it's critical you use the resources web 2.0 platforms such as Wordpress provide.

At the same time I as a programmer prefer to build my site by hand and not use the messy the Wordpress code as my base.

So my question is, does a system like Wordpress really give me a significant advantage over non-Wordpress like sites? And if so what elements of the Wordpress system make this so? (so I can optionally choose to program these elements myself)

Loaded question aside, you could program everything wordpress does yourself. It's just a CMS. I've made several CMS before, but I choose to use wordpress because I'm lazy and it works fine. If there are any changes I need to make, those are pretty easy to implement too for anyone that isn't retarded when it comes to php.

Enjoy writing your own. In the time it takes you to do so, I could have made 10-20 wordpress sites.

Ok, yeah that makes sense. What is it that makes Wordpress so good for the search engines though? What particular options/plugins?

I ask because I am also considering the Expression Engine blog/CMS which is built on my prefered PHP framework "Code Igniter". If it has the same options that make Wordpress great I might choose to go with it instead...

^^^What Cakes said.

I don't think that there's any merit to the adage that "Google loves WP sites." I think it works the other way around, that lots of people who love Google use WP. It's easy and quick and yes, a little cumbersome, but it can be extended in ways that most other CMS applications either don't offer, or make so difficult that it's pointless to try.

If you can code up your own stuff, by all means do so if you want to. It's just easier and faster to use a CMS, and WP is currently the "market leader" of sorts in terms of popularity, extensibility and support.

PS. WordPress is not a "Web 2.0" platform. Punch anyone who says so in the mouth -- in fact, just to be safe anyone who uses the term "Web 2.0" in a breathless, "You must! 2.0ify! Your business!" sort of way should probably get smacked too.

You're up awfully early for partying in Boston...unless you never went to sleep?
