Alloha,

Just a few questions about keyword lists?

What are the advantages of building a keyword list manually ie by hand? As opposed to using the free tools?

By using exact match does that not mean you will need literally hundreds of keywords to even get any decent traffic?

What is the best way to build a list of thousands of keywords? Is it just time and effort and expanding on what works?

Cheers

Advantages:

  • If you're creative, your list can contain some totally off the grid keywords.
  • When researching, you become more intimate with the niche

Disadvantages:

  • very time consuming
  • flying blind - unless you do data research for each also
  • the phrases you end up with are limited to your knowledge

Getting decent traffic on exact matches has everything to do with your bid amount, ctr & ad copy. Search volume comes into play as well.

Sure, broad matching will give you tons more traffic. It's a great long term plan if you know you're sticking around the niche, get ready to lose your ass for a few days/weeks though while you prune.

If you go the free route, use some tools to get a base list. Then go over all of them looking for ideas to expand. Then send the new words through whatever tool you're using. From there, just hope and pray that you don't have to look over 10,000+ words to find the ones you'll use.

You can do it by hand but if you might get the wrong keywords no sense bidding on keywords that noone is looking up. Thats what the tools are good for I like to use the free wordtracker or the google adwords tool
