I have it narrowed down to a few ideas... Want to submit something on Monday so I stop procrastinating on trying this.

Dating, Payday loans, free website design, and drug rehab seem to be the obvious choices.

Any feedback I plan to buy quite a few benches to try it out

whatever you do make sure it has a mobile optimized lander - most folks out walking on the street (or at bus stops) will see the ad and go to the site from their mobile browser, if your lander isn't mobile optmzd forget it.

the methods mentioned above are the impulse sale mentality - hoping someone will see your ad, pull their phone out of their pocket or purse and navigate to your lander.

one suggestion I'd definitely make is have a super brand-able domain to promote, i'd stay away from hyphens or anything you aren't able to remember in less than a second.

then there is the branding method. alcohol companies, for instance advertise on buses to create brand familiarity in hopes their name will become infused in your brain the next time you are in their aisle at the liquor store.

the combo's are the injury lawyers who create brand familiarity (411-pAyyyeeeaiiin) and also hopes for the odds that the bus is rolling by while you are in an accident and need to know where to call.

you can also advertise on the interior of the bus, obviously you are targeting a much different demo on the inside than the outside of the bus. payday would be great for the inside of the bus, and depending on the route you are on you could get several 100 views per day easy.

I'd be super careful with bizops (your lander mainly, I dont think you will be able to put your tracking URL on the side of the bus, lolz) you don't want the feds out front getting a hotdog seeing your shady ad roll by. way to think outside the box!

how much does a bus ad cost? would seem like a lot , im guessing

You would be surprised how cheap general advertising is. I have ran radio spots, full page newspaper ads, billboards, ect... Hell ive even bought Urinal ads and bathroom ads. Cheap as shit.

It's kind of like doing an online media buy. Some places will be GOLD and net 1000% roi while others will completely bomb.

Houck Transit Advertising <- for bus ads

And honestly on payday loans you don't want to mobile optimize, that would be a stupid way of losing money.

Run a pay per call and plaster the number huge enough so it can be seen from far away. Lot's of poor people don't have smart phones or have phones with shitty browsers. Most of these guys will be on no contract plans and might not even have data, nor have an email address. I would target the ad towards blacks.

What did you end up going with? I agree on payday lending and bizopps, especially on the inside of buses and bus stops. Does your area do ads on the bus tickets? Maybe they could be convinced to.

how cheap is cheap? Are we talking $5,000/mo or $500/mo?

Text short codes work. Fact.

Get them to text on impulse. You now have a mobile number to call and message later when they get home.

For the double win use unique shortcodes per format, one for bus, one for bus stops etc.

Very easy to track and personalise.

Set up the auto response like.. Hey thanks for your interest in our shit, we know you are out and about right now so we'll call when you get home. What time suits?

Voila - you now have dialogue with your lead :)
