OK, I've read the threads I can find on WF about GCN, including many excellent posts/threads by ImagesAndWords.
I'm still unclear about whether direct linking is possible (or in fact, desireable).
This is what G's official policy is from a "Google employee" in the Adwords forums:
Hi starsmk,
Yes you can advertise your affiliate link with AdWords, however per our URL policy which affects many affiliates, Google will only show one ad per display URL for each search query. This means that if another affiliate ad for the same site outperforms you, that ad will show instead of yours. Learn more about our affiliate URL policy in link enclosed.
Also, your site shouldn't mirror (be similar or nearly identical to) your parent company's or another advertiser's site. Google won't show multiple ads for identical or similar landing pages at the same time. This means that if another advertiser's ad leads to a landing page that's similar to yours, and his keyword has a higher Ad Rank, his ad will show instead of yours.
Hope I have answered your question.

So, if I want to link to widgits.com, only the highest-performing affiliate gets to display the direct link, and only that person can link to the widgits.com home page -- no more, or the LP would be identical.
So, I'm trying to promote a CPA CC# submit offer with a nice payout for a big national company with a home page that presumably has been tested to convert well. I have looked at the Quantcast stats and although the audience slants a little bit this way or that, it's really a product/service with broad appeal that could lend itself to a RON type of approach.
What if I try the "huge amount of keywords" strategy to lower my CPC and have a RON effect. In this case it is unlikely that many of my long tail keywords would be getting bids from other advertisers for this offer and I may be the only one bidding on them and so may be able to direct link. Would this work?
And -- regarding this -- I have read conflicting statements about the best number of keywords for one adgroup.
I have read that 50 is best, presumably because G only sees or recognizes the first 50 keywords in an adgroup. (Has anyone tested this?)
Then there is also the above-mentioned "huge amount of keywords" strategy to lower CPC. This strategy says to load up the adgroup with up to the maximum of 2000 keywords per adgroup, and have a lot of adgroups. Kind of a multiple shotgun approach. Anyone tried this?
Then there is the question if it is in fact a good idea to even TRY to direct link. I just didn't want to go through all work of creating an LP, (and possibly a whole review site) if it wasn't necessary.
Thanks.
