right this last month i've been well and truly stiffed with exchange rates on my wire payments due to me having a UK sterling credit card so i've decided to take the plunge and get an offshore USD bank account. now with that i've got the option of applying for an amex card but it leaves me with a problem. i don't have a full time job (i do this) and i also haven't been banking long enough to have accounts let alone year end accounts.

so what should i put on my cc application so i get accepted. my new account is well funded with 20K so i can in theory just use my debit card to pay advertising but that doesn't leave much room for expansion and as we all know you can burn that budget in no time. i do have an A1 credit rating.

any ideas how i should approach the application form?

If you have no credit history in the states, it's likely that given the current economic climate, Amex will give you the middle finger. Now is not the best time to be applying for credit and even in the best of times, Amex is not a card for someone with no credit history.

Your best bet may be to try applying for a card with a bank that you have an established history with in the UK that also has a US presence. For instance, HSBC if you have a UK account.

thats the problem i have 3 uk cards with $25k+ credit limits on each and a perfect credit score but i run into the same exchange problems paying off a uk cc. its the bank transfers that are killing me. hence the need for a usdollar cc.

HSBC is my offshore banker and who are offering me the amex card.

Apply, if it doesn't work, apply again and again until they are so annoyed of you applying that they just give you the card. I got a Plum card with literally no credit which was surprising to say the least. HSBC is an awesome bank to work with though, especially with overseas banking.
