So I got a buddy who allowed me to share his ded server for free (cool). After 5-10 second page loads or site outages with PPC expenses in the mix was bullshit with shared hosting, so now its for real....

Heres the question:
he only has one IP, and uses outside coders for his site, uploads etc. He doesnt have nameservers etc, so how the hell do I move a domain to the server without nameservers (dns)?

thanks

Get your own stuff or risk loosing a friend over petty web hosting fees

Host your nameserver elsewhere (free like zoneedit.com or paid), point domain to your friend's IP. That's just a part of the problem tho. I would be REALLY worried about some people messing with my dedicated server. Outside coders for his site will see your stuff, too. At the very least they'll have to setup virtual domains on the Apache.

Why not get serious and get yourself a good VPS which for all practical purposes will look to you as a dedi server, will be all yours AND will be managed for less than $40/month ?

VPS vs Ded

Cause I dont want ANY issues with downtime. VPS isnt as safe as a ded.

Many times if he does not have his own nameservers, dedicated companies provide the name servers.

So for liquidweb for example, if you want to use their nameservers (which is good for affiliate marketing), you simply make a request via the admin system to add a domain to their dns point to X ip address.

They add it usually within 5 minutes.

so..

So you just pay a nameserver fee, not host fee?
What is the advantage for that with AM? More stealth.....?

A lot of systems allow you to do it through one of their control panels etc. It is a good idea, but when they yank their stuff for maintenance your gonna get hit.

go to softlayer "deals" section or whatever it's called. Get the coupon and get the 179$ deal. Then use Namecheap for all your name server stuff. They can handle it all then you don't have to run your own namservers which takes some of the complexity out of things.

Just my 3 cents.

In my experience, you'll get better uptime with VPS than with most non managed dedicated plans.

The company managing the VPS is actively managing the host machine. Depending on how they do things, if the hardware dies they can fire up the nodes on a different server faster than they can fix the old server. If the box hangs, they know about it, and can reboot it quickly.

With dedicated, you're on the nut for all that yourself. If the box hangs, you're calling in to get some guy to call some guy to walk over and reboot, once you notice. If a disk dies, you're just one customer to them.

That said, you have to be more careful choosing a VPS. I personally use Linode (aff) but I've heard equally good things about Slicehost (now a division of Rackspace)
