I have seen a lot written about submitting to directories. I understand the importance from a backlink point of view but if done on a large scale, does it bring in any numbers in terms of direct traffic?

I wouldn't rely on directories for traffic, simply because, if you are new, your site will most likely be the last one in a category. Thats for the active directories. For the less active/new ones, your site might be near the top, but it's still less active = no traffic.

I agree,

Most directory sites monitor how much traffic your getting to your site, the more traffic your getting the higher your rankings in the directory are going to be, hence the reason why so many people cheat, spend the 5 bucks and get 50,000 useless traffic to their site, this will raise their directories (Not All but a few).

Directory submissions are only good for one thing, another source of backlinks for your sites, I've never seen a big enough increase in traffic coming from a directory to recomened it.

directory submissions don't bring traffic
I doubt you'll get 10 visitors a year from directories and yes, before someone asks, I have submitted my sites to hundreds of directories in the past years
