I think people do notice affiliate names in URLs, at least before they click on a link. If you don't have a cloak set up, or a redirect, then you could at least use a URL shortener like bit.ly.
No, never use a url shortener. Jesus. Use a proper redirect, on your own domain. If you don't know how to do it, learn.
When you send an affiliate link through a 3rd party url shortener, if the site owner is on the crooked side(which some are) they can send whatever the hell cookie they want whatever percentage of the time they want.

Is that like this?

Your affiliate link takes you to something like yoursite.com/someproduct.html

and then that page loads for half a second and then redirects you to the affiliate site with a cookie for your id?

So instead of clicking a link that says: yoursite.com/AFsiteID=hugedong6969, the link actually says "yoursite/com/someproduct.html" and that's what the browser sees?

Can you put google analytics on that referring page to see how many people click your link? Like just put it right before the redirect?

point taken, thanks

Yes, that is correct but you should redirect instantly without waiting half a second.

Check out this thread if you don't know how to redirect.

Just a thought, but you'd be able to make a fair bit of (I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but) Clickbank dough with this.
Set one up, get it to insert a few different accounts you have with CB over theirs if it detects a hoplink, and then just go to DP and the other WF, and promote it with a "Hey, the tinyurl you want's already taken? I've got <insert URL here> and it's brand new!"
... And then monetize the site directly with a CPM banner...

It'll only take a few weeks before people figure it out, but in the meantime, you have two 40k strong forums of idiots using your site to promote to each other.
