How important is the age of a domain? Let's say someone just bought a domain and sat on it for a long ass time, is it going to rank quickly once you start doing something with it? Will it save you SEO money (assuming you outsource SEO) in the long run?

I found a .info EMD that's almost 9 years old. I bought it for $60. Smart move?

For $60 I wouldn't worry too much.

Domain age is a common misconception, it's the age of of the link profile that carries the value, not the domain name itself.

There will be abit of an advantage to a domain which has been indexed for a while, over a brand new one, but the advantage of a 9-year old domain vs a 3 year old will be minimal.

Domain age is one of several factors google takes into account.

Older sites generally have backlinks that have been up for a long time.

The fact that a domain has been renewed for many years also tells Google that it isn't just another throw-away domain and that the owner was willing to 'invest' in it for several years.

I've been testing this recently and most of what I've found points to the notion that google can tell the difference between domain age and website age.

I've not seen any appreciable proof that a domain that's been sitting parked for 10 years is any better than one that was registered 10 hours ago. If an actual functioning website has been there for 10 years, that's another story...

depends on what you intend to do with the site. I would MUCH prefer a 10 yr old domain over a new one. But for seo purposes this is good info. Thanks.
