So, here's the deal.

I've been doing some SEO for a buddy of mine, and he's been paying me really well and he's been pleased with the results. It was my first time trying SEO out and I've been learning as I've gone.

His web design guy contacted me and wants some help with SEO. We had a meeting and he is in a fairly competitive niche trying to sell water sports equipment.

He wants to have kind of a trial period and see how that goes and we'll decide if it's working out.

The plan I have is to put together a proposal of one-month's worth of work as the initial trial period. I just want to get thoughts on this approach. I don't want the initial trial period to be too short for me to actually get some results, but I don't want it to be too long and cost too much that they don't bite.

Nope.

Never work without pay.
What are you? A charity?

So, the trial period isn't without pay, he just doesn't want to sign a long term contract or anything without seeing that I can actually help him out.

I'm not going to promise him any results per se, just telling that I'll offer him x number of backlinks in these different manners (i.e. blogs, ezines, directories, etc) and then giving him a work over for the on page optimization as well.

TRUTH. Stick to this principle and you will thank yourself later. I learned this the hard way.

Working for free now = being a sorry ass broke ass bitch later.

If he's paying you enough during the trial, that you'll make good money regardless of if he goes further, than do it.

But if you're getting paid some trial amount that isn't worth your time unless it goes forward, don't bother. He's either broke, or he's not sold on SEO. He's not going to see any real ROI in one month, and therefore he's unlikely to go forward further. Don't waste your time...unless he's paying you well enough now (not promising to later).

Awesome. I appreciate all the feedback. I sent him the initial contract for one month and the pay will definitely be worth my time if he accepts. And then if he doesn't want to keep going with it later then I still get my money. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Make sure he understands that SEO is a process and not a procedure. 1 month isn't enough to show any really meaningful results (especially in a competitive niche). My clients have to sign for a year minimum.
