i got maybe a third way into it and still had no idea why i was reading it. just endless descriptions of some guy i've never heard of. three dozen sentences in, and i still have no idea why i should care or what it was about, and i bailed.

You are missing out. The man is really interesting, his son was kidnapped and recovered, has his fingers in all sorts of stuff.
i'm not doubting he is, just saying the jackhole reporter in this particular article is more interested in a fucking pulitzer than informing his audience. i'll google the subject, thanks for letting me know i should.
