Hello,

A client didn't configure his computers properly, so, after a time, they left their hosting space absolutely full, over quota, and the email addresses annulled. They called me, I went to their office, and managed to download all the messages using FTP. Now the emails work and the account is not over quota any more, but I am full of email messages here I cannot use with any email client: Evolution, Thunderbird and even Opera fail to import them, so I do need to ask:

When you download email files from CPanel (/home/example.com/mail/ folders), in which format are they? How can I turn the messages into something at least one email client will recognize and import?

Help me please. This is kind of urgent for that company.

The problem most likely isn't the format of the files but the filename. If they are named with hostname.hostingprovider, the . acts as a separation for the filename and extension, so the extension is being misread. From what I can tell, other than hours of manual work, your best bet would to be upgrade the companies email hosting package and re-upload the files to their server where you got them from. Upgrading to unlimited email shouldn't cost more than a few bucks a month with any hosting provider.

I've got to go to work right now, but the search you need to do is 'import Maildir'.
The problem is probably that your filename has been corrupted during ftp when you downloaded them and/or you need to change the extension.
