Hello, I have an idea for a site...that would essentially promote a lot of different items...say sporting goods.

Will I be able to be successful targeting a wide arrangement of items on one site?

You can be successful doing practically anything. It all depends on what keywords you're targeting, what the competition looks like, what you're backlinking strategy is, and how hard you're willing to work.

Re

Try to be unique as much as you can. Unique keywords, meta tags, encrypt links and try to write good description for each product. Back links are very important and I would do 30 per week because you don't want Google to sand box your site. Have an email form to get sign-up because most people will not buy right away. Offer something free to download. Check this guy that has click-bank mall,..don't remember his name anymore but he has a site with cb offers and makes 6 figures per month. I would copy somebody's work and then try to customize it.
-Good keyword research-words with 2000+ searches and less then 20,000/month
-Back-linking-target related blogs and sites with high page rank.
-Write and submit 1 article per day
In few months you could get few 1000 people on your site on monthly bases.
Good luck

Well, first of all, I don't even know what backlinking is...
Second, this will mainly be a content site that has stuff to buy etc...
So...idk where to even start. I have the domain and hosting figured out, but now what?

My first big site is exactly like that. It's profitable through PPC, but let me tell you... if you're talking about a competitive industry, which I'm guessing you are, don't do it.

Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, you'll be on page 4 for 200 different product pages, which is worth less than being in the top 3 for ONE product page / site.

Take your niche and promote ONE product or product line. Find one that gets a fair amount of searches and isn't horribly competitive. Or a hot new product that nobody's promoting heavily yet. Get the keywords in the domain, and pimp that ONE product. Rinse and repeat.

I spent 2 years building a site like the one you're talking about. It's great, still alive, but I learned my lessons. I then started launching micro sites that can get more traffic after releasing in three weeks than the original one did after years of effort. Divide your niche by 1000, trust me.

Well I started with a free web host just to see what it will be like with wordpress etc. I am gonna try some more stuff with it and then buy a real domain and hosting. I have chose a less broad niche, as you call it, and will be trying to make a content based site at first. Hopefully I can start getting some traffic and money from adsense or the likes, and then add in AM. I'm sure I'll be visiting this forum quite often.

You can, but the more you tackle the longer it may take you to see results.

Think about it in the grander scale.

You have big stores like Walmart which have everything (like your sporting goods), you have medium stores that are "sporting goods stores" and then you have more specialized stores that might just sell lets say "Baseball stuff"

Now, even within that baseball store there are going to be a lot of bats, balls, golves, diamonds, etc.

If you go too wide with your offerings you are going to have to tackle more and more keyword phrases to get traffic to your site.

If you choose something very specific you can get a better picture of your competition as well as what you need to rank for.

The list shortens greatly.

Unless you are able to brand yourself within a specific region, trying to brand yourself on the web is going to be a lot of work - unless you have beaucoup bucks behind you.

Your a new my friend :) Whats your idea and I'll help you expand on it, everyone has to start somewhere.

You gonna tell him about how to spend $10k building an impractical website in perl when it could have been built for 20x less using php and still turned out better?
