I am moving 20 sites from Godaddy to Hostgator. Databases at GD are much simpler than HG and I usually just make one per site.

Now I am confronted with 'make a db and then create a user' at HG. This gets me to thinking, is it better to make one db per site and have lots of dbs or just assign sites to a user and have lots of users.

I guess I mean 'better' in terms of security, ease of moving the site later, rebuilding, maintenance, etc.

What do you think.

You are talking about attempting to use a single database for all of your websites?

That is a horrible idea in my opinion.

Agreed.

Keep the sites on separate DBs. Whether you create another user or just use the same user for each DB is up to you. For security reasons, I'm sure having a different user with a diff. password for each DB would be better.

Lots of apps like wordpress let you put a prefix on the tables it creates. Thats how you can pull off multiple applications and a single database as well. Just in case you still want to go down that path. :)

Another reason against a single database for multiple sites:

If you want to sell or move one site, porting the data will be more difficult.

Gobs of databases seemed to me to make the most sense, so that is what I had always done. It was just mounting up to be a lot to keep track of because no two passwords of mine are the same and the are all extremely strong, especially after some Turk owned a site of mine for a week last summer.

I was just curious if I was doing a bit of overkill.

I was also about to hit the 25 they give you at godaddy with that one hosting account. I wasn't sure if I was being a db pig or not.

The 2 step process of creating the db and then creating a user for it was a bit confusing after godaddy. It seems like a 1 step deal over there, although the database name and the usernames are the same at godaddy. That probably just consolidates those 2 steps and makes it a bit less secure in the end.

Another reason godaddy sux.
