This question is to any AM that has been in the business for at least 12 months or longer-

My Situation-

I currently make 140k at a job in the IT field. I'm getting sick of the work and I hate the commute. I'm exploring business opportunities on the side that can at least provide close to the same income and would allow me to work from home, but also have a larger upside and growth potential if desired. I have close to 25 hours a week to dedicate to a new venture.

Questions-

1. How much money can realistically be made in affiliate marketing with 25-40 hours a week of dedication? Also, how long would it take to realistically to achieve this amount? Lets use an average, if one exists.

2. For the first answer, can that amount be made by just writing and submitting articles, or should I plan to also learn how to develop my own websites?

3. It seems that the network marketers are claiming to be making a fortune with their systems. Which is more lucrative? Affiliate Marketing or Network Marketing?

I greatly appreciate honest responses and advice. No sales pitches please.

Any other advice for a newbie evaluating Internet Marketing, please chime in.
I look forward to and thank you for your replies in advance.

Respetively,

New_Guy.

1. It doesn't work like that.
2. I'd keep the articles for your own sites.
3. Again, it's doesn't work like that.

I always thought this post was really insightful, because you just can't force yourself to do certain activities if you hate them, no matter how lucrative they are for other people.

There is no average. A lot of people can't swing it at all. Then some make several hundred thousand(or more) a month. It's really a question of how good you are/have the potential to be.
2. For the first answer, can that amount be made by just writing and submitting articles, or should I plan to also learn how to develop my own websites?
No. This place is mostly pay-per-click, but writing articles=outsourced work. Develop/promote your own sites via, or use PPC. Or both. Or find something more unique.
3. It seems that the network marketers are claiming to be making a fortune with their systems. Which is more lucrative? Affiliate Marketing or Network Marketing?
If you see the word "system", run the fuck in the other direction.

There's a lot of sarcasm here, but sales pitches you won't see much of. Those guys=tarred and feathered around here.

Yeah, sales pitches are mostly in people's signatures *↓↓points down↓↓* :D

I work for a CPA based affiliate network that does mostly Media sharing and streaming media niches.
Statistically speaking (you may want to pull out the maths dictionary for this one), the mode value of the affiliates on the network is $0... For whatever reason 80% of them don't even start a campaign.
The median value is just over $80cpm, so it becomes entirely a game of how much traffic you can drive into the site.
I would say the absolute mean value, if you put in some effort, you can see maybe $50/day/site... It's a nice top up for a weekend away, but it's not live-off-it money unless you manage to do some serious work and have multiple sites.
EXAMPLE: The guy that has the domain of piratesbay.com hit a peak of $9k in a day, but is doing more like $2k-$3k. Obviously, our best affiliate, but it's just an example of what it CAN be like in the best case scenario.

All that said, being a small company, we're very responsive to our affiliates, and work with them as best as possible. This includes advice, or even designing a whole webpage for you if your traffic is goooood. In fact, if you end up with me as your manager, I'm always happy to just sit and chat with you (helps me avoid doing "real" work ;))
Larger networks, although better supported etc., often are NOT as responsive, especially if you have a complaint or issue (see: ClickBooth) with them.
Ideally, you'll be able to find a company that meets somewhere in the middle.

In terms of anything that offers a Multi Level Marketing system, yeah be very VERY cautious about them. Some affiliate companies let you refer people on, and then you can get a nice little 2% or $0.50 piggy back on their sales or whatever as a thank you for getting a new affiliate, but one that relies on you selling the exact same system you just bought into? Do what XMCP says.
The only people that get rich of Pyramid (or Trapezoid (+rep for the 1st person to reference that)) schemes are the people that started them. Also, for future reference, MLM usually = Pyramid.

Okay,some serious answeres here.

1) Be prepared to work your nuts off. When your friends are going out for beers, you're at home working on your sites. When your wife wants to have sex, you're working on your sites. Work, work, work... WORK.

2) You can make as much money as you want. Seriosuly. Pick a number and then work to achieve it.

3) No systems, no crap, no tell-alls. If they are selling you on a dream, well... good luck.

Bottom line = common sense + marketing knowlege + trial and error = profit

Hence, bottom line = profit.

Oh, PS, WORK.

yeah I'd say it's either you have it or you don't.

You need to have a very entrepreneurial spirit for any kind of marketing, especially the networking and affiliate variety.

You will need to work at least 40 hours a week starting off at network marketing, learn a LOT about selling, and talking to people, etc. It will take about a year to make a couple thousand a month steady if you do everything right in network marketing.

On the contrary, with affiliate marketing, you can spend about 30 hours a week starting off, find a gold mine and make mid 5 figures your first couple months...

Either way though, if you don't have that be my own boss drive and spirit - it most likely wouldn't work

Oh yeah, if you suddenly do find yourself making thousands of dollars a week, don't be a total numbnuts and buy yourself a Ferrari testerosa and a beach front apartment in California...
Invest that money to the hilt in something with good returns, your 401k, your current mortgage, whatever! Just make sure you're not pissing it away on the highlife, because guaranteed, unless you're a genius, that income stream is gonna dry up while you're at the wetbar.

NewGuy may I make the suggestion that you do it on the side until it's sustainable enough for you to not worry about your other job?

By the way, what IT field are you making 140K in - startup and/or security field? :)

I made 18 cents last month from ads on one of my sites.

Amount: $0.18 USD
Transaction ID: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Subject - Payment
Note: Payment for revenue generated.

Now I just need to apply that strategy to 27,000 more sites and I'm pulling in 5k a month. :D

man I suck at this. :repuke:

Agreed!

I'm no top AM YET but I have been into affiliate marketing for a while and it definitely takes A LOT of work. You have to school yourself on marketing and soak up lots of knowledge, participate in forums, etc.; make mistakes and learn from them; learn how to put up your own sites as you go along; learn about article writing, blogging, generating traffic and a number of other things; AND WORK YOUR BUTT off; learn to spot which products are actually worth anything and will sell; and WORK WORK WORK some more.

I'm not making thousands a month yet but I am doing decent. Again, one key is learning which products to sell and which to not waste your time on...and it will take wasting your time a few times and surfing around to find out what things are valuable and that people really want before you learn how to pick and choose.

I've promoted a number of products that didn't make me any profit but then promoted a few that people really do want and are valuable and made some good profit.

You definitely need to do this on the side before quitting your dayjob for a while to learn the things you need to know and creating multiple income streams is key. NEVER put all of your eggs in one basket.

And develop a thick skin to make it in the marketing world, affiliate or otherwise! You'll catch a lot of shit out here for one reason or another and some people will love what you have to offer or how you offer it and others will hate it and let you know!

Good luck and just remember perserverance pays off. I think most people fail because they give up when they find out it's no overnight venture.

1. A lot, but you gotta be putting in the work.

2. No.

3.Affiliate pays well for me

99% of the businesses that fail have a problem with cash flow. keep your job, keep the cash coming in, slowly learn what you are doing and establish yourself. Then when you are comfortable with the income you are earning, quit that job and do it full time.

Just be prepared for an average of 4 hours of sleep a night until you can make this work...

There is no magic-bullet to making money quickly and with little work, other than mugging anyone dumb enough to yell out "Yeah! I gots a winnin lotto ticket!"
You want to make beer money, do this in your spare time.
You want to make money to retire on, it'll be a 16 hour day for you.

Dr Harvey prescribes NoDoz and a well roasted Columbian coffee, either covered in dark chocolate, or a nice medium grind.

Hey New Guy,

I am new to this forum, but not new to AF or to Network marketing.

The number one piece of advise I will give you is KEEP YOUR JOB, while learning. There is a long learning curve because there is so much out here.

If you educate yourself and work smart, you can make more than your current income. BUT...being that you are new to this, do NOT expect to make it like a lot of the hype you see. Most of the people who make it super big, have been doing this for a while and finally came up with their own system.

They then marketed it because of all the information they learned prior to making it big.

Regardless of whether you do Network marketing or Affiliate marketing, you are going to find that the best success is "relationship marketing" (look it up).

People are tired of being scammed by all the so-called "I made a bazillion dollars in 2 days" crap.

I have found that success can be achieved multiple ways. I can throw a lot of money at something and get some amount of success. I can put all my free time into it and find some success too, and never spend a dime. But what I have found to be most successful is being genuine and honest about anything that I am doing.

If I start something new, and someone asks me how much I make, I tell them the truth! And guess what happens? They join me because they TRUST me to be honest.

Take your time, do your due diligence. And any time you think you might want to try something, search online to see if others have done it and what they say about it before jumping in. You will save yourself a ton of time (and money)by doing that first.

There is a lot of money to be made. But like all things in life, you have to be willing to go that extra mile.

Here is a place I want you to go. Dani Johnson's Work At Home Profit Zone | WorkAtHomeProfitZone.com

Register (it's free) and listen to the quickstart training. Once you are in the right mindset, then it will be easier to make the decision on where to go from here.

Best of luck to you!
