Hi,
With all the rampant illegal downloading of ebooks and product, is there any way to prevent such things from happening to my product?

What are the top internet marketers doing to protect their products?

Do they offer a password to another website to view their contents or something?

Thanks.

There really is no sure-fire way to prevent the illegal downloading.

The most full-proof method would be if you created the entire thing inside your website where someone had to login each time to view it, i.e. a flash book. Even then it could be ripped with some effort.

What most tend to do is create a PDF and password protect it, then require someone to have sent details and paid with Aweber. Once payment is complete, they get E-mailed for the unique download link and password information. I don't like this by itself, because once the PDF is downloaded it could be sent out in private torrent trackers or posted onto forums.

You might go one step further and turn the PDF into an executable file that needs to be installed. Once installed onto a PC, it pings your site and registers the key to activate it. Then, only one person could look at the PDF at a time as it would relog them in to the system once they open it up. It still has holes, but it's a little more secure.

Yeah it's almost not worth the technical headache and dollars to prevent the piracy versus spending the same amount of dollars and effort marketing your product. Yeah your stuff will wind up on a torrent somewhere, and if it's password protected then some script kiddie is going to crack it and post it for fun. It's just the nature of the Interwebs.

I don't sell e-books any more, but when I did, I had a setup that compiled a PDF file on the fly and stored it for a download under a unique name (anything unique would do, like the order number+timestamp). That way, the person who ordered it can re-download it in the future by following a link in the receipt.

On the first page inside an e-book, it included the name and other information of the person who placed the order. Basically a statement like "This copy is licensed to John Doe, his@email.com...".

I didn't password protect the files and didn't use any drm techniques as they are more hassle for the users than they are worth.

Of course, it's possible for anyone to take the content of the PDF file, edit out their contact info and then compile a new PDF. But not many people would know or be willing to do that. People generally won't waste their time just so that others can benefit by getting your e-book for free.

And yet, having their name inside the file made sure they wouldn't just upload the file as is to some torrent or p2p site and also won't start spreading it around their friends.

So that's one solution you might want to consider.

Thanks

Hi all, would like to thank all of you for the time and effort to answer my query. Thanks for sharing your experience and i will research more into each of your solutions.

Additional answers are welcomed too. Thanks!

Ditch worrying about it.

The time you spend on this is better spent doing something else.

check out mike dillards new e-book magnetic sponsoring. It will have your name on each page. It somehow autogenerates your info on each page when you download it.

Don't put it on the interwebs at all... Mail it out to them on a floppy disk

There's a way to do that with this: FPDF

I almost coded up something to do it, then said fuck it. But basically, you would have your main pdf somewhere in the non public file system, then you would use fpdf to load up that pdf, and add the user's name, email, ssn, tits, etc to the pages and then that's the pdf they get sent to them.

I would imagine people would be much less likely to share a document with their tits all over it...

Well usually these pdfs and ebooks get sent out on torrents when you hit a certain amount of sales... usually if your new to selling ebooks id worry about getting the sales first, and then once your raking in some good money, then worry about that...

also if you do find your ebook on a torrent, no point in trying to report it etc, usually never works, but what does work is spamming the torrent networks with "fake" copies of your ebook... works like a charm .. :)
