How would you monitize this?

How are you thinking to monetize with Adwords? I would rather monetize with Adsense, not Adwords (means you pay Google - Adsense means you get paid by Google).
I wouldn't go for AM (Affiliate Marketing) for now, since probably your target is not into buying, since you can't give more informations about the target.
Go with Kontera, Infolinks, Adsense for a while. Then SEO the 'hit and then see if you can manage to put some affiliate marketing in it.
See what they are looking for - if they are interested to buy something. See how many informational keywords you got coming to your site. How many transitional keywords. How many "buy now/reviews/etc" keywords.
Also, you may try making money long term with email marketing and getting list. See if they are interested to buy your digital products.

basically stuff that doesn't require someone to pull out their credit card to submit

If it's actually young college males and not just young males, try college paper affiliate programs or Adsense ads.
I would absolutely sign up and get some affiliate offers on there. College guys buy stupid shit, and lots of it. Stupid t shirts, things related to booze, magic pills to give you six packs, dating offers, etc etc.
Start with adsense, thats a given. Create some way to capture their email address or even better a cell phone, so you can create a list. A good way to do this is to require them to register. Also, look into placing ads on your site for products like acne relief, muscle gain, dating, video games, cars, sports, etc. Also you should look into CPA offers.
You could also try credit card offers (capital one?) and those pre-paid, no-credit-history-necessary cards.
i would put adsense or something like it on the site and see what ads pop up and find the affiliate program for those that you tend to see a lot.
or take a shot in the dark with cpa offers, ringtones, penny auctions, coupon sites, email submits, penis pills, muscle builders might all do well
