htaccess and custom 404 prob need help

Hello.... I am not understanding what I am doing wrong. I deleted my whole website and installed wordpress. I wanted to have a custom 404 page to catch the search engine traffic to the pages I deleted.

I get the wordpress not found page when i type in html or nonsense
like whatever dot com/skdkshdfkjsh I get the not found page like I want

But anything .php is not working so whatever dot com/bob.php i get the 404 but not my custom page

I hope I am making sense here. I have been playing with my .htaccess and nothing i do seems to make any difference

Can anyone help me?

wordpress has its own 404 page, check your theme and redirect it to your custom 404 page

I see the 404.php in my theme ....

That page is working when i type in whatever dot com/bob.html

but not working when i type in whatever dot come/bob.php

I will use the wordpress 404 page thats fine I am trying to figure out why it doesnt do the 404s from php pages. ?
